I removed it last week. She was 14 weeks, 13.5 lb.
For babies 11 lb+ with good head control, our ped said we should remove it to continue fostering good neck strength. She's been MUCH less crabby since we removed it. Maybe it was too restrictive.

Last week after I read a comment on the boards. We have a Chicco and the newborn insert needs to be removed at 11lbs...my baby was about 13lbs.

we never removed it until we switched to the convertible seat around 8 months. It was handy to have it there when she fell asleep

Like a month. She has always had really good head control. But she seemed annoyed by it and would get really hot from it. She started hating the car seat less once we took it out. We used some blankets for support.

You should read the instructions that came with the car seat and follow their guidelines. My car seat (though I expect all car seats are similar) required that it be removed by a certain weight/height.

@merriment: I checked the manual and it doesn't mention when to stop using it!
@blackbird: Interesting... maybe I will try it without and see how she seems...

@sslm That's crazy! Those manuals are so intense, it seems like a critical piece of information to leave out! We had a chicco keyfit 30 and I think we removed it when DD hit 11 lbs.

@merriment: I know! I thought it was weird too. We have the graco snugride30. I googled and couldn't find any info about it. So weird.

@blackbird: we had the same issue. once as we removed the infant headrest around 12 weeks, LO was not as crabby in the car seat. still doesn't love it, but it's better.

Like @Smurfette: , we took ours out at like 4 or 5 weeks. She's not super floppy and would get so hot in the seat with the inserts. She tolerates the seat better without the insert, and still seems secure.

@Mrsbells: this exactly! Our head support thing detached (velcro) from the body support portion, so we used that since she would always fall asleep in the car.
Now I always think that her neck is aching when she dozes off in the convertible without it!

We used it the entire time she was in the infant seat. However, Britax leaves that to the parents' discretion.

We still have ours in.
We use the britax infant seat (dh's car) & the Combi Coccoro convertible (my car).
He's 9m old.

Well, crap. LO is about 14 pounds and we still have the infant insert in the Chicco Keyfit 30. Just read the manual and wll be removing the insert tonight...

We took it out when it seemed like it was squashing my son's head. Then I read the manual and saw it should have been taken out at like 11 lbs (I think he was like 14 at the time). FTM fail!

uh oh. LO is about 12 lbs (probably a little more) and has pretty good head control. We have an eddie bauer seat from Target. Should I remove ours??

We just did at 5 months and 16ish lbs. I'm sure we could have done it a lot earlier, but honestly I didn't think about it until we had to move the straps up for her length. She's so much more comfortable without it, especially in this heat. I wish I did it sooner.
