When is the appropriate time to start designing and decorating lo's nursery? I'm only 9 weeks, so I know it's still early but I'm already daydreaming and pinning stuff like crazy. Would September be too early still? I just don't want to be doing it during the holidays.

I would at least wait until you start telling people, if you already haven't. That way if you have people over, and they see the nursery, they don't find out that way!

Are you finding out the gender, and if so does that matter for colors? Because then you have to wait 20 weeks anyway. I would at least wait until 12 weeks, but that still seems early to me.

we started painting in the beginning of May - because we don't have a/c upstairs (just our bedroom) and I didn't want it to be miserable for my husband. I was about 4.5 months along? We definitely waited until we knew what we were having.
However, we had the crib purchased since 9 weeks (ugh) because ILs bought it as a gift and wanted to take advantage of a sale.

We bought the furniture last weekend at 19 weeks. Honestly even that was earlier than I would have preferred... but my MIL was in town and wanted to buy it for us. It turns out it was good we did because it can take up to 12 weeks to come in. But I personally want to wait until 24 weeks (viability) until we start making too many changes to the room. I'm paranoid like that and it just helps my anxiety to not get ahead of myself.

I started as soon as I was pregnant. I did not get it finished, however, before she was 3 months old (she slept in our room)

We weren't able to start until I was around 27-28 weeks, but only because we had been living with my SIL and didn't move into our apartment until then. Had that not been the case I probably would have started early-mid trimester, when I had a bit more energy.
In your case, I would wait until at least the start of the second trimester...but I'm super paranoid about things like that.

We waited until we found out the sex at around 17 weeks. I ordered the crib and glider then. My hubby started painting when I was 21 weeks. I guess it depends if you're finding out what you're having and if that matters. I was super paranoid and wouldn't even think about starting until I was out of the first tri.

We’ll be starting at the beginning of my third tri but that’s only because that’s when we’ll be moving into our house.
In any other circumstances I think I’d wait until about 20 weeks just so that by then you know the gender, etc.

I knew we were doing a safari theme before we even got pregnant, so we told our families the theme and they've been giving us things they already own that can work as nursery decor.
We are now starting to seriously consider furniture purchases (crib/dresser). I'll be 20 weeks tomorrow.

I started the nursery super early, we found a great deal on furniture on Kijiji when I was 7 weeks pg, and I wanted the paint to be done before we moved the furniture in so we got to work right away. It was painted and furnished by the time I was 12 weeks. I kept addin and adjusting things until she was born though

I'm almost 14 weeks and we've only emptied the nursery out. We probably won't paint for another month or two. My parents are buying the crib and they'll bring it in October.
You have time, don't rush too much in the excitement. -
I started around 20 weeks. I basically waited until we knew the sex and went from there. It was great having everything mostly out of the way towards the end of my pregnancy. I could focus on other preparations and wasn't busting my tail when I was as big as a house.

At 20 weeks, I started painting....
We're almost 21 weeks now and I want to get the painting completely finished and buy the furniture this weekend
I know it's still early and we have plenty of time, but I want to cross it off my checklist of million things to do for baby!

Around 20 - and it is still a work in progress. I'm 37 weeks on Monday, so that status needs to change fast.

@Mrs. Cat in the Cradle: this is part of the reason i want to start early - it takes me FOREVER to complete a project.
we're actually team green, so there's no real incentive to wait until 20 weeks. since baby is due early february, i DEFINITELY want it to be done before the holidays. life gets crazy busy around mid-november. we'll be 20 weeks in late september, but knowing myself, if we wait until october, it certainly won't be done by mid-november.

I'm almost 20 weeks and we're hoping to have the room cleaned out by 24-25 weeks and furniture ordered by 30 weeks. We have the glider already (got it about 2 weeks ago) because it was on sale and I knew that was the one I wanted. It's stuffed in the nursery with tons and tons of random boxes.

I'd say start whenever you've got the time. I've been pinning and planning like crazy, but not actually purchased anything other than a chair for the room. Getting it done before the holidays sounds like a great idea - I'm 20 weeks and plan to do our nursery over the next two months while I'm on summer vacation.

I started getting ideas and researching what I wanted as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I ordered the crib around 20 weeks and bedding shortly thereafter...and so glad I did because it ended up being backordered and could have taken a lot longer to come in than what it did. I didn't buy any items for the nursery until after my first baby shower. Then, I started organizing stuff. At 30 weeks I ordered a glider (I couldn't decide on if I wanted to spend the $ on one), and it will probably be here right around when the baby gets here. I still have one more shower to go and the nursery is pretty much done...I am 32 weeks. Glad it is done, because now I don't have much energy to work on it and we are ready for whenever he decides to show up.
