This isn't even on our radar yet but I'm curious when you moved to the seat that is beyond the convertible carseat? I think weight/height will be the reason for moving out of the convertible when we do.

We switched my older LO around 4.5. We needed to move my younger LO up to a convertible seat, so she got his old one and he has the one in the picture. We don't have a car and my kids have been in cars less than 30 days this year. If we needed a car in our everyday life, I would have just bought a second convertible and used it until he outgrew it.

We moved DS because we needed it for DD
I moved DD because it was going to expire

We recently needed a third seat to go in my mom's car. Already have 2 Chicco NextFit convertible seats. We went with a Britax Frontier G1.1 Harness 2 Booster which is basically a harnessed booster (so same as a forward facing convertible) up until 90lbs then a high back booster using the seat belt until 120lbs I believe.

M is technically out of a convertible now because A needed it. She's in a harnessed booster but it's essentially the same thing.

I was wondering the same thing! J is still in his Britax, but he's under 40 pounds and will be 4 in December. So I figure as long as he's within the limits I'll keep him in there?

We bought her a Britax Frontier (can be a harness FF seat or a belt high back booster). She was age 3.5 and over 40lbs. We still have her harnessed at age 4 and she doesn't mind at all. We will keep her harnessed as long as we can but I'm not sure how kindergarten drop off/car pool line will go if she's harness because they get out of the car on their own.

@regberadaisy: Yup, this was us too. I figured it made sense to get her something that would work as a booster instead of another convertible.

This isn't on our radar yet either, but in general, the harnessed booster is every bit as safe as the FF convertible, right? If that's the case I guess we would think about getting one when baby 2 needs a convertible, so C will be almost 3.5. If there are safety differences we will probably wait. I guess I'll do that research in a year's time!

@Foodnerd81: I really don't see why there would be? It also uses LATCH and has a 5 point harness. The weight minimum is obviously typically higher than that of a convertible.

@T.H.O.U.: we are in this drop off line business bit right now with our 4 year old. I park in the parking lot and walk her most of the way to the entrance of the school. Currently, we drop LO2 off at daycare first. Next year for Kinder we will switch it up and drop off the older first. I suspect we will have her belted in the booster at that point.

@MamaG: Yea our kindergarten line will just be a pull through. So the parent does not get out of the car at all. The earliest I can drop off is 7:45 so I will need to be ready to drop her off and head straight to work (no time to park and walk her in). So I'm thinking a belt at that point that she can undo might be necessary. My other option would be to get in line early and get her unbuckled while we wait to pull forward.

@T.H.O.U.: just an FYI - my DS is 7 and can easily get in and out of the harnesses buckle alone - however in DH's truck he cant buckle himself in with the belt (he has a booster in that vehicle). One of the reasons he is still in the 5 point harness - its just easier!

@Foodnerd81: yes, if you are going to forward face, as long as your kid meets the height and weight requirements the seats are equal.
My son is almost 5 and he can unbuckle himself from all harnessed seats, chest clip and crutch buckle.
