I had LO evaluated at 18 months. He tested at 9 months for expressive, and on-target for receptive. She didn't recommend therapy at the time, and just gave us suggestions and said to call back in a couple months. At 18 months, he sort-of had 3 words. He started talking around 22/23 months (though he'd made progress in the meantime), and now at 28 months is average for his age.

ETA: I should add that he had over 60 signs, so there was expressive language there, just not verbally. That's one of the reasons she didn't recommend therapy.

We had 12ish words at our eval right after DS turned 2. He's been in therapy for 1 hr every week and has definitely added more words over the past 2.5 months. He is imitating really well and has picked up some signs really quickly to help him express his needs. We expect him to start stringing words together pretty soon, our SLP told us around 40-50 words is usually when they start combining. Can't wait for his speech to really take off!

I'm wondering this as well.... DS is 14 months and says this, that, mama, dada, but not really in a functional way. His receptive language seems on target, and he can point to many correct items when we ask 'Where's the kitty?" etc. He can also follow one-step directions. But we're just waiting for the actual words at this point......
