At 8 months LO loved Little Baby Bum videos on YouTube. They are kids songs like Wheels on the Bus, nursery rhymes, etc. Maybe around 13 or 14 months he got a Daniel Tiger DVD for some big travel and loved it. He still enjoys both and he just turned two.

ETA It wouldn't hold his attention for extended periods of time, but was a good distraction sometimes.

We tried to use videos/iPad as a distraction on a flight when LO1 was 15 months and she was not very interested. The only things that kept her attention more than 30 seconds were a bubble popping game and a coloring app.

She started really liking to watch videos around 2 yrs old.

My 26 month old will only sit for about 5 minutes for a 'show'. However, he loves watching family videos on my phone

on our last flight my 1 year old wanted nothing to do with my iPhone other than to press the home button 70,000 times. That flight was stressful until she fell asleep because I found it harder to A) keep her confined to my seat B) keep her entertained in the seat C) get her to nap
good luck. lots of snacks, new toys (or old standbys), and a big bloody mary when we landed got me through.

Oh one thing you can try is baby Einstein videos from YouTube. That was one thing he would actually watch for 5 mins or so at that age! The more dumbed down the better.
