our doctor didn't say either way, but both our boys were done motn feedings/wake ups at around 3-5 months.

At the nine mo appt he mentioned sleep training. He then said he finally convinced his wife to try CIO when their first born was 9 mo. The baby cried till he threw up, and his wife went in, grabbed the baby and said "never again." I told the dr "no thanks" and he just laughed. Honestly, doctors aren't trained in sleep, and I would probably switch peds if he tried to make me feel bad about night feeds.

Our pedi tried to push us to drop MOTN feelings by 4-6 months but DD#1 was still hungry at the 4-5am wake up so I just kept going with it. She eventually dropped the feeding herself. With DD#2 this time she started stretching out her first feeding to 8 hours around 6 weeks and lately (2 months now) she's been going from 630/730p-530/630a so I just follow her cue. Some nights she wakes at 2/3a. I think I will stick with the on demand feeding like with DD#1 unless the MOTN get out of control.

Our pedi brought it up at our 6 mos appt and told me to try to start getting away from them... I didn't agree w him, my position was if my baby wakes up hungry during the night I sure am going to feed her! Anyway, I didn't have to worry though b/c LO dropped them herself around 7 mos. We started her on solids and she just naturally dropped the MOTN feedings.

My doctor said not to wake my LO for feeding during the night at her two week appt. She weighed 6 lbs 1 oz at the time. With both my girls I tried hard to establish good routines during the day and night time because my husband and I have careers that we need to be sharp for. I only have a 12 week leave so I need them to be STTN before I go back. My first (who was also low birthweight at 5 lbs 2 oz) started sleeping through the entire night at 8 weeks. My youngest is 7 weeks old and had her first 8 hour stretch last night. At this age, I only go in to nurse if they are full out crying in the night, and I do give them time to see if they will settle themselves first. They do a lot of fussing as babies which I ignore since I figure it's part of the self soothing process. Most times they will fall back asleep.
My almost two year old has never had a sleep regression and she went from first percentile for height and weight to 80 and 60. I breastfed her for 13 months until I became pregnant again so the early night weaning didn't effect my supply at all.
I hear a lot that people think early sleep training is cruel, it will kill your supply, cause failure to thrive, etc, but it really has worked well for us.
