When is a kid too old or too big for a stroller?

When is a kid too old or too big for a stroller?

I say 5! Dd is 40ish inches and 36lbs and she still looks small in out stroller. I'm hoping to get at least another 2 years out of our double!

When she can no longer fit in one? But I doubt that will stop her.

I would say 5 too but my SIL still brought a stroller with them on vacation as they would be doing a lot of walking and knew my 5 yo niece would not be able to keep up. However, she thought that would be the last time it was needed.

I always thought kids looked too big to be in strollers, but now that I have kids, I don't ever want them to be too big for a stroller..!!! Just so much easier than chasing them down (or dragging them along) and keeping them quiet!
So I'd probably say 5 or 6. On the older side for my kids in particular since Wagon Jr. is really small for his age.

i'm not going to say an age, because kids vary so much in size...but I think the legs touching the ground thing is SUPER tacky. Seriously---that child needs to walk (obviously if he or she is physically able to).

@CupQuakeWalk: lol! That's my vote too. DH said that to me the other day, "if your feet can touch the foot rest, you are too damn big to be in the stroller!"

I always thought 4-5 but now that B is 5, it's so hard when we're out for the day and he's walked a lot. He complains that his legs are tired so we either take breaks or I hold him (which isn't easy during the third tri of pregnancy). I wish I could put him in a stroller sometimes!!

I'd say 4. A school child in a stroller is just a pet hate of mine.
If s/he was tired I'd rather DH or I gave a piggy back or up on our shoulders.

@Mrs tartan: Uh oh, our eldest is 4 1/2 and we still use a stroller when we're on a long trip through the subways! Are your kids school aged? Wondering how you guys handle trips like this...

I would say 4.... But that's mainly because I feel like when my LO is at school, she is too old for a stroller. And I know at that age I'd been out of mine a long time... But we didn't live in a big city, I feel like I will never be comfortable with my kids walking around where we live now. They'll be in strollers till they're teens!

I think it depends on the circumstances. I don't blink at a 6 or 7 year old in a stroller in Disney at the end of the day. In a mall, though I think 3 or 4. @MrBee for your circumstance I would agree because there is a need for containment, ability to move quickly and of course the same situation with Disney that it can just be too much. My kid hasn't been in a stroller in a long time, but we do babywear which I think is a very similar thing. And I plan to babywear until he is at least 4 and probably 5 or 6.

@mrbee: oh sorry I read the question as in, the last age I think it would be acceptable, meaning at age 4 I still think its ok but age 5 is when I'd probably start to take a second look.
5 year old kids can look so different size wise though, and of course on long journeys or in a city is so different to me living in a village in the countryside.
I do however, cringe when parents turn up at our local school with 5 year olds in a stroller when their house is a 200 metre lovely nature walk away. I think Aaaaa let them out, spend an extra 5 minutes looking at flowers and leaves, instead I smile and say good morning

It's hard to say. We live in a city (and we don't have a car) I have seen pretty big looking kids in strollers at the zoo or museums and just out and about sometimes too. I guess it depends on your lifestyle. We can easily go out for half the day or more and I don't know when my kids will be big/old enough to keep up. Currently my 3 year old either rides the wheelie board on the stroller, or his scooter, or walks. But I walk very fast and he just can't keep up with me.
@brownie: my son weighs probably 38-40lbs and I would fall over if I had to baby wear him (even on the back)!

I would probably say in the 6 year old range. I saw an 8-10 year old in a single stroller at the zoo and I thought that was a little wacky.

I also feel like I know it when I see it! I'm mean though, I don't even make exceptions for Disney - my younger relatives and I all started going around age 5 and got around just fine without a stroller. But my attitude about it probably comes from being rammed or stuck behind people with their pre-teens in strollers a few too many times, haha.

@wonderstruck: i went to disney at 5 and my brother was 4 and we didn't use a stroller. but we were tougher then.

@Mrs. Bee: Haha, yes I totally feel like a grouchy old person talking about it! "Back in my day, we didn't need those strollers, we walked all day!" lol

I think it depends on where/how long you are out and about. You can't expect a five year old to walk/stand in disney all day long. What's the stat - for every step you take they take 3?

My DD is 5.5 and still sits in the stroller occasionally. But we only bring one out with us, and let her fight for it with my DS.

Ask me again when I have a big kid, but 5 seems old for a stroller for most occasions. It's a big pet peeve for DH, he hates seeing big kids in strollers, but I'm more like, well, we don't know how old the kid actually is, and how long they've been out and about.
@brownie: I cannot imagine wearing even a small 5 year old!

This is something that I am even back and forth on!
My daughter will be going to school next year about 2.5 kms from our house (to go to French immersion), and I am pondering a Chariot style double to avoid having to drive or take transit (when I don't want her to be on the bus). But she would be 5, and my younger daughter would be 2.5. Is it a silly investment? I just cannot imagine her walking that far at the end of a long day of school (since kinder here is a full day program).

OMG that blog LOL!
Some kids are way too big for strollers. Way. And childhood obesity rates just keep on a-climbing!

I'll say ask me again in a few years. I grew up in a city walking all the time and I never was in a stroller at 4 or 5 years old. Since we currently have no plans to move outside of the city, I'll say maybe I would cut it off at 4? I try not to judge when I see bigger kids in strollers.

@Foodnerd81: I would rather wear them, than carry them. I do know 5 year olds that need to be carried. He is a tiny kid and I suspect he may be 40 pounds when he is 5. Of course, I require him to walk 98% of the time and the baby wearing would be those times when they have to be carried. I already require him to walk a lot (disney).

@Mrs.Someone: OMG this is HILARIOUS.
I do roll my eyes when kids are bigger than the stroller and they look uncomfortable sitting in it.
I would say when they start school. my tune may change since DD is only 19 months. We have her walk as much as possible and when we don't bring the stroller I have to carry her and she is a heavy little one. I can't wait until she can start scooting herself on the scooter.

@MrsTiz: totally agree with your DH's if they can use the foot rest thing.
Once we could walk, we were expected to walk. I never used a pushchair after my brother was born when I was 2yrs 4months and I remember being shocked in nursery when one of my class mates rolled up in one!
