I would book now, but I'm no expert. We're flying to San Fran for Thanksgiving, and when I checked prices originally they were really reasonable, and then a week to 10 days later, they had gone up by nearly $300 per ticket!!! It ended up being least expensive for us to fly early Thanksgiving morning and come back on the following Monday (a redeye flight.) Try searching Google flights using the "flexible dates" option since you do have at least a LITTLE wiggle room. In the end (after filtering a bunch of different dates/times) we were able to find a really good deal.

I read somewhere that 51 days before your trip is the sweet spot! I'm not sure if that applies to holidays, but just thought I'd share.

I made the mistake of looking for Christmas flights the weekend before autumn officially started. $300 for PHL-ORD which is unheard of these days. I scrambled to make plans with all families and looked 2 days later and they were $350. I've checked daily for weeks and the price hasn't budged. I'm holding out hope the prices drop a little!

Unfortunately, my answer is book before fall hits next year and people start thinking about Christmas! Sorry I couldn't be more help this year. Thankfully there is still a lot of time left - crossing fingers the prices drop!

Now. I did a lot of research that said mid-Sept to mid-Oct is the best time to book. And Tuesdays/Wednesdays are typically the best days to purchase airline tickets. We got tickets two weeks ago for ridiculously cheap, but I'd been watching them like a hawk for about a month.

The travel guy on CBS always says book first thing on Wednesday morning. So make yourself a pot of coffee tonight to book at 12:01 am.

@Mrs. Bee: just saw on facebook that Southwest is having a three day sale. Not sure if it will be cheaper than what you've looked at, but thought I'd give you a heads up!

For the holidays, I would book now. Those prices aren't going down.

FWIW, my husband already booked our holiday flights a month ago and prices were already higher than normal.

Book now doll! Prices are only going up! Particularly once November comes. Hope the weather in NYC is cooperative for flights this year. Christmas in LA will be fun.

I would book now. I think in general, ticket prices have been rising. Try using yapta.com to monitor the ticket prices & see if you can get a refund.

What prices are you seeing? Have you thought about Jet Blue into Long Beach or Burbank? JFK to Burbank on Jet Blue looks like the cheapest option.

We booked our flights this week. They kept going up.

Yup, now. I think the date Sept 29th ish for Christmas travel. I still haven't booked ours. I need to.

I would book now for Xmas, they typically only go up from now till Xmas. We fly to visit the ILs every Xmas break and typically buy tickets around March to May at the latest.
