Do you discipline/react the same way you would at home?
My LO (2 yrs) did not want to sit down to eat dinner and she cried dramatically while I tried to reason with her. It wasn't working so I ended up ignoring her while I ate my dinner. She climbed into her booster seat a few (long) minutes later but MIL, FIL and BIL told us we need to spank her when she acts like that. Ugh.

Yes, I treat acting out the same, whether we are home, out or at someone elses's home. It means that sometimes we have to leave before we (the parents) are ready.

I do, but in a less stressed out way. LOL! My family understands, though, b/c sometimes it's just necessary! We just do what we do at home which are time outs.

I thankfully haven't had to deal with this much yet, but my plan is to discipline exactly the same as I would at home. I think consistency is important! I would've done the same thing as you in that situation!!

Do you spank normally? I feel like whether or not to spank is a pretty personal decision, and TBH I would be very annoyed if someone told me I "needed" to spank.

Yes, we discipline in the same way we would if we were home! Yelling and warnings, then time outs. I just find a step somewhere.

@MrsSCB: same! my MIL told me to bite DD if she bites me (20 months). umm..add to the list of reasons I don't let you watch her.
O isn't quite old enough to get it, but if she did, I would do the same as at home..redirect her, or ignore her, depending on what was going on. I find ignoring her works best right now! She feeds off any other reaction.

We just spent a week with relatives. Its hard because we were much more lenient with her but also strict in other areas. There was only one time we had to remove her from the situation and do "think time" in the car.

It's so hard around others... I feel their judgement so much more! Like, if she acts up I feel like everyone feels like we don't discipline her but then if she cries a bit when we put her in the crib my parents/in laws freak out. I feel like it's a lose/lose situation.

@kml636: definitely agree....our families will make comments about us being too harsh or we are spoiling too much ! They aren't very consistent with their feedback...No win situation!

Haven't experienced this yet but dreading it... a family member has already voiced some pretty old school ways of disciplining that just don't sit right with me, or ones that I flat out will not do. We're going to see family at Thanksgiving and I'm nervous about what comments I may get about how to solve any behavioral problems. Not excited for that part. -.-
