We are planning to use disposable diapers. A couple of coworkers told me recently that a diaper genie was a waste of money, and we should just get a cheap trash can to put in LO's room for dirty diapers. Did you find a diaper genie to be useful or pointless? If you didn't use one, what did you use instead?

We use a very small plastic Simplehuman trash can but it has to be emptied pretty much daily, especially now that he's on solids. It contains the smell except when I open the lid.

Ubbi diaper pail! Can't say enough good things - doesn't require it's own bags, not hideous decor wise, holds lots of diapers, and most importantly - keeps in the stink!
ETA: We have 2 big dogs who get into trashcans so having one that locked was important too.

We just use a cheap trash can. As long as LO was on majority breastmilk (till 13 months) her poo didn't really stink so we didn't need anything else. But now, her poop totally stinks but she only goes 1-2 times a day and I put those in small grocery sacks and take them out immediately. Pee diapers just collect all week till the trash is full.

We were given a diaper genie and we like it. We're in a condo so getting rid of diapers is pretty easy, so i doubt we'd have bought one ourselves.

@LBee: Good to know - we have a large dog, who has never gotten into the trash (our kitchen one locks anyway) but I've been wondering if he'd be intrigued by diaper trash!

We were gifted a diaper genie. It works fine, but I think a regular garbage can with a lid would do the job too.

We have a diaper genie and I feel like it does a pretty good job of containing the stink. C is 18 m and still poops several times a day, and our building garbage bin is two flights down, so we definitely don't empty it as often as we should.
Thankfully my dog has never been overly interested in garbage, diaper or otherwise.

I don't have a dog but LO is definitely interested in the trash. I like that she can't get into the diaper genie (yet). I think it does a pretty good job at holding in the stink.

Never used a diaper genie and definitely didn't need it. Just used the regular trash and took stinky diapers out right away. I could see the need if you lived somewhere where you couldn't take trash out frequently.

We got a diaper genie for my shower and it does a good job concealing smells. I would have got an ubbi if I was buying it on my own because the diaper genie refills are $$$ and a PITA

I love our diaper genie for disposables- never had a problem with stink and the target brand refills are a decent price. We also have two small simple human trash bins from Costco that we use for wet/dirty cloth diapers (which stink more IMO) and those also do a fine job, but the under side of lids rusted very quickly which I don't care for. Just a heads up if you decide to go that route.

We use this one and love it. No special bags required....just regular trash bags. We used it with disposables in the beginning and now use it with cloth. It has a pocket for an arm and hammer pod thing....we put one in there and have never changed it. I don't ever notice a smell.

I put them in the trash. We use them at night, so we don't have enough to necessitate a Diaper Genie. I will say, if I go a few days with one in the trash, it gets nasty. If I was exclusively using disposables, I'd probably consider a Diaper Genie.

We have a diaper genie. Sure, it isn't "necessary" but I like it. It definitely contains the stink for us. I keep an eye out and have bought all our refills on sale or on Amazon warehouse or at Costco (we stock up when there's a good deal) so I really don't feel like they were terribly expensive!

I hang a plastic grocery bag off her dresser. It doesn't stink because we toss the poop in the toilet (which is what you are supposed to do regardless of what type of diaper you use). We throw out the bag 1-2 times a week.

We use a Munchkin Arm & Hammer diaper pail. It does a great job of keeping in smell so we don't smell anything unless we are changing the bag.

We've used so many different type of diaper pails before buying the diaper genie. It's the only one that doesn't stink. We don't flush poopy diapers with LO #3 yet because its nearly impossible when they aren't solid.

We use a diaper dekor diaper pail that we really like. Also, when our toddler poops, we empty the poop into the toilet, and then wrap up & throw away the (now empty) diaper. This makes it so there is zero diaper pail stink, regardless of what pail you use.

I love our diaper genie. We actually have two--one upstairs and one downstairs.

We were gifted a diaper genie with our first so we used it. She was formula fed and her poos were stinky! By the time she was on solids & in size 3 diapers, we were going through diaper pair refills so often that it wasn't even worth it and started throwing diapers in our kitchen trash can.
We hung on to the genie & decided to reuse it for our second. She's breastfed & her poos don't smell (and she goes frequently!!). She's also on solids, but her poos don't seem to smell - I'm wondering if that has anything to do with her being BFed.
Anyway - we moved the diaper genie to make room for our Xmas tree and never brought it back in from the garage. We use the kitchen trash can and it works just fine.

We just have a small lidded trash can. I keep it in the laundry room next to our regular trash can because we don't have a changing table and usually just change LO in the living Room.

I find the genie useful I glad I have it, but it is not on my top 10 most essential items list or anything.

We also have an Ubbi and love it. It contains smells really well, and the locking feature was important to us because of our dog.

Love our ubbi hate the diaper genie. Once baby starts Solids a regular trash can is not going o contain te stench unless you take it out every day!

We just use a simple human trash can! And it's not just a diaper bin either. We just throw it out in our main trash can usually. Will probably invest in an Ubbi.

I just keep all the plastic bags I get at the store, put dirty diapers in there and then in the regular trash. We take it out every other day or so. And with diapers that are just wet, I'll pile a few in the bag so as not to be too wasteful.

I love our Ubbi for all the stated reasons. Almost two years and still going strong. Bonus was the cute colors to match the nursery.

We take each diaper to the outside garbage can street each change, so nothing in either bedroom.

I use a plastic grocery bag for every diaper change, and then have a metal rubbish bin outside of our back door (on the deck). all nappies go outside, and it gets emptied at 4.30 when hubby gets home. it gets washed every week and a spray of disinfectant/deodoriser every day. no stinky

We used a wet bag for pee disposables for our first, for our second we just walk the diapers to the trash right outside the door on our patio. We have a ranch style house, so it works just fine.
I did use my SIL's diaper genie and it worked fine and didn't smell, we just have no need for anything that complex at our house.
definitely need something that locks!
