I have some in my cart at Pottery Barn but am a bit squeamish at paying that much for something we'll only use for a month each year. Anyone have another one they can recommend that is classic but not as expensive? Or should I just bite the bullet?

I'd just bite the bullet... It is $$ but I think if you're gonna keep them for many, many years, it's worth the cost.
You could also wait until they have a sale or a coupon?
Myself, DH, and DD have custom (plain) etsy ones but I'm planning to get nicer personalized ones this year now with DS so they are all matching :). I'm cheesy like that...

We have ones from Target. Not buying super nice ones till we have another or know we aren't. I would hate to buy them and then need another years from now and can't find one to match.

@Smurfette: oh that's a great angle I hadn't even thought about! I definitely am planning on another, maybe even 2. I should probably check out Target soon. I just want something classic and not cheesy and my search online is yielding some meh results.
@mauxie: I will check out Etsy, too.

I have cheap stockings from Target. I will invest in a nice set later!

@coopsmama: personalized ones from lands end. Same as my family had growing up. I really cherish them.

We buy new ones all the time. D sees them during the holidays and picks out a new one for himself. Usually this happens at target or Walmart, but we've gotten them in the mall before.

@coopsmama: I got some cute sweater material ones last year. I don't have any pictures on my phone or I would show you.

I'm sorry to threadjack, but I'm looking for stockings, too, since it's LO's first Christmas. I want to personalize them. Are we supposed to put Mommy and Daddy or our first names on the stockings?
blogger / grapefruit / 4836 posts
I got some from target (just searched for them and dont see them, so they may have more selection later) and don't intend to ever need new ones. I had them personalized at a local shop and love the way they turned out! I don't think you have to spend a ton if you can find a look you like elsewhere. I just bought an extra assuming we would have one more baby, and will personalize that one for her next year.

@Mrs.ThinMint: i put our first names. My kids will know i have a name other than mommy, and im sure they will be our stockings after the kiddos have grown up.

@coopsmama: similar to these but not these. Last year they had green, red, and ivory.

@coopsmama: I got PB knock offs from Joann's the year we got married and love them. They're really thick and soft. I wish I would have bought 4 of them instead of 2 because I can't find them there anymore.
So, I bought the same ones as @Smurfette: from Target in red. They're a different shade from the ones I had from Joann's and not as nice.
I keep going back to the PB ones but I can't justify it!

I have the PB ones but we waited until the were on sale after Christmas and bought them for the following year.

Stockings aren't really something I'd splurge on since they only get put out for such a short period of time each year and don't see much wear and tear, but that's just me: to each their own! My husband and I have white "His" and "Her" stockings we got from my parents when we were engaged--they were from Meijer and cheap; the trim fell off one but they're still really cute and sentimental! Lettie has one with a snowman on it we got as a secret santa gift last year before she was born and saved it for her. Doesn't match our set but we like an eclectic Christmas decoration look and you can't beat free! If we hadn't got them as gifts I would have hit Goodwill or another thrift store for them: they always have lots of Christmas decorations!

Mine and DH's are pottery barn. DD's is from etsy. My sister and I had (still have) stockings my great aunt made and I love that they're unique and homemade, so I wanted to get something similar for my kids.

I got one I loved from world market. I couldn't find it when I got married, so I got DH this one from target. It's similar enough. Mine is just red and white knit

I bought mine at Target last year and sewed on the letters (I cut them out of felt). I'll be buying another this year for LO #2

We all have matching ones from PB. I had my childhood stocking for my entire life so I didn't mind spending a little on nice ones for all of us. I didn't want to be getting different ones every few years.

I just got your standard fluffy white & red stocking from Target. I'm pretty sure I'll never drop any major coin for stockings

@Smurfette: this is my issue with stockings! So we don't have any yet

I ordered large stockings from Paloma's nest for our fam of 4.
I'm expecting these to last forever!

Definitely check out Target, WalMart, and Kohls!
I refuse to pay PB prices for stockings. Blech. Id rather just make handmade ones.

@Mrs.ThinMint: I put mom and dad
We have PB ones that I got on sale I love them and thought they were worth the $$ bc we'll use them forever. I intend to buy another one next year for baby2

I have nice ones that I've gotten from post-Christmas sales.
What about get cheap ones for now and then wait for post-Christmas sales and get nice ones.
Actually, come to think of it. I have a lot of stockings! It seems like every year I grab some on clearance. I need to get rid of some of them.

PB has 20% off stockings from now through 11/5.
I did the red velvet and cream ones from PB. I like that they are classic, and nice (they always look brand new, even being crammed in a box all year), and PB carries them every year - so I can add to them as needed and they'll all look the same.
We started with ones for DH and me, and a small one for the dog, then added LO1, and this year as soon as we figure out who LO2 is, we'll add his/hers. I think that is a major plus, that I've been adding to them for 3 or 4 years and they all look the same:)
I think ours were like $19, plus I'm sure I had some coupon code because they are constantly emailing them, so it really wasn't that bad. We maybe even got free monogramming, which I think they end up doing when they get desperately close to Christmas. I see tons of stockings at Target that are not nearly as nice and they're not much less, always $12 or $15. So as usual, I found a way to justify the crap out of them
Not to mention we plan on using these for as long as we can. So let's just say they are $25 each with monogramming/shipping. If you divide $25 by 15 years to keep the math easy, that's only $1.66 per year. SOLD.

I'm planning on making or buying some personalized ones when we're done with our family. I know we'll have at least one more, and most likely adopt, so I'm afraid I won't be able to find something to match in the future. Right now Dan and I have the same cheapy Targety stocking and Sadie has a different one. They look cute together though!

I got ours from Hobby Lobby. They were having 40% off so they were super cheap. Then I had them monogrammed. I actually bought them before I was even pregnant but I just bought a couple extras since they were so cheap.
grapefruit / 4903 posts
@Radish: awesome! They take FOREVER, but they'll last that long too. My mom has one from her mother, I have one my mom made me from my childhood, and I'm working on LO2's now.
clementine / 958 posts
@Radish: @rattles: Me too! I'm still working on one for each of my girls - fingers crossed that they're both done for this Christmas. I still have the one my mom made for me, too.

I got E's from ugly sofa! They got a big batch in last year closer to Christmas, premonogrammed (I think they're pb returns).

My husband and I have some red and gold ones we bought on sale at the Bay a few years ago. In a few years when we're done having kids I want a matching set of 4 (or 5?). For now our daughter is using the one my husband grew up using. Here we are when I was expecting her in Dec. 2011. You can see all 3 socks on the wall.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
If you are okay to wait, PB stockings are half price after Christmas. That's how I buy them.
