I love Samuel and especially the Biblical story about Hannah and Samuel and the child being a longed for child. That's a beautiful sentiment to me.

I've never personally cared for Elijah and I feel like it's really gotten popular.

I like both names but Samuel has always been my favorite. We already have a few Sams in our family so never considered it - I just realized that one of the Sams (a Samantha actually) has SAK as her initials. I would have never thought anything of that!

I feel like Samuel is getting popular again so I vote Elijah.

I'm a fan of Elijah and the nickname Eli so I voted for Elijah.

I love both names so I don't think you can go wrong. I have a friend with initials SAK and have never thought anything of that.

In terms of Eli/Elijah, I wouldn't worry about nicknames too much. We call my LO by both her full name and a nickname pretty much interchangeably, and she even has a different nickname at daycare.

I love Samuel but if you don't like the nickname Sam then I wouldn't do it because I think him being called sam is inevitable.

I agree with @hilsy85: . I think it will be very hard to avoid him being called Sam. What about Simon?

I love Samuel. My DH vetoed that name though. But agree with others that if you don't like the nn Sam, I would go with Elijah. I think the nn Sam is so cute though!

I voted Samuel because it's a family name on my mom's side, and we'd have used it for a boy if we'd had one (and if two of our good friends hadn't used it!) instead of DD. But, we have a nephew who's Eli (short for Elliott) and I love that name, too.

I love Samuel, but it worries me when you st no nickname! He will get called Sam or Sammy no matter what. If you can be ok with that, that's my vote. Otherwise I love Elijah too.

I really like Samuel but I think avoiding a nickname would be an uphill battle. So for the reason I would prefer Elijah for your situation. Elijah and Eli are great names.

@Leialou: I knew a family that had three boys named Elijah, Micah, and Isaiah. Not sure how you feel about the other two, but I figured I'd throw it out there since they all seemed to be within the same vein.
