Short history: I had my daughter 2014 with a midwife practice who delivers in a hospital. We really liked my prenatal care, their approach to childbirth, etc. But I ended up with high blood pressure at 41+1, they said I had to be induced, I labored 18 hours, and they told me I needed a c-section. My midwife was very in and out (granted there were 2 or 3 other patients of hers delivering at that time, it was a really busy day). Afterwards my incision opened up. And the midwife I saw for my 1 week appointment missed it. I asked to see the OB on call because I was uncomfortable with her answer, and the OB discovered the LARGE incision opening. So I kind of felt like... you might be great at normal birth but you aren't very good at post-c-section care.
Now I'm pregnant again and I want a vbac. Considering switching to the OB that delivered two of my friends' babies who is very natural minded and supportive of natural birth (and I assume VBAC).
Pros/cons of midwife practice:
- continuity of care
- I did really like their approach to pregnancy and (in theory) birth... assuming I didn't have to be induced again.
- They do 8 week dating ultrasounds
- I feel more comfortable with female providers
- You rotate seeing all the midwives for appts and you know the person who delivers your baby
- They specifically told me I was a good candidate for VBAC with them.
- But their office is not as convenient for doc appts, and hospital is 30 min from home
- I"m not sure I trust them anymore (not sure if that is fair though?)
Pros/cons of new OB:
- I like that he's an OB, makes me trust him more to deal with a vbac
- His office is less than a mile from our home, as is the hospital he delivers at
- But I won't even meet him for 6 weeks because he won't see patients until 10 weeks for an ultrasound (also having to wait longer for ultrasound)
- His office works on an on-call system so it's more likely he will not deliver the baby unless it is an induction scheduled in advance, and I worry that the other docs in his practice might be less sympathetic to VBAC.
I don't have any other recs for care, so if I don't choose one of them I'm just picking a name out of a phone book basically.
WWYD? Sorry this is long... really torn on figuring out where to set up my care this time!
I was 3 weeks late, my husband was 2 weeks late, and 41+1 I was dilated less than a centimeter with LO. I feel like the odds of my going into spontaneously labor are just so low... my body, my family, my babies... we all just like to be pregnant forever it seems lol
