Unique for sure.

Definitely Unique. Now, if I was given a specific unique name I had to use I would probably prefer one of the top 5. But if I could pick any name I wanted as long as it was below 500 I would definitely choose that option.

I prefer unique but not too unique. My name is too unique (and Asian), and I didn't like it growing up in school. If it's too popular, then you end up in a classroom with two other people with your name and have to go by First Name Last Initial.

My response is 'depends'. I wouldn't choose a way out there name that is hard to pronounce or spell, for sure, and would much prefer to use a top 5 name. But there are also plenty of "normal" names that are outside the top 500 now, but wouldn't be crazy or weird. For example, Pamela, Joyce, and Blair, all reasonably ordinary names, are over 900 on the social security list for 2011!

But if the choice was between a strangely spelled and pronounced or boring and popular, I'd do boring and popular. DH's name was in the top ten when we were born and sure, he always has other people with his name, but it's no big deal.

my favorite girl name (Rosalie) was around #550 last year, but it definitely isn't so unique that it's unrecognizable/difficult to pronounce, so I definitely prefer that!

Unique, I think that there are non "weird" names out of the 500 I really dont' want LO to have the same name as 5 kids in their class!

If I could pick any name as long as it appears below #500, Id pick unique. If I had to have really, really weird name below #500, I'd go top 5!!

I'd like to say unique but LO's name was in the top 10 and our future LO's name choices are in the top 20...sigh.

Unique, our LO's name is ranked in the 600's but was ranked 150 15 years ago.

@lawbee11: I'll be spilling the beans, I never understood the allure of keeping it secret, especially not from HB! Our top 3 girls are Harper, Clara and Molly. In that order..no boy options yet!

@MrsTiz: We are keeping it a secret, but one of those three is our decided upon girl name (team green). Boys name is still to be determined.

I would rather have a popular name than a "unique" name thats impossible to spell or pronounce

Our LO will be named Gwendolyn, which is out of the top 500 but I don't think is weird (obviously).

Our sons name is in the 500's as far as popularity, so I would definitely say unique. His name is Desmond - which I don't think is hard to spell or pronounce.
