We had our anatomy scan yesterday and it showed one white spot called an EIF on the heart. There weren't any other markers. Our OB said he wasn't concerned at all and said that they are pretty common but we can go have it checked by a specialist if we want (he didn't recommend that we had to). I had my blood tested a few weeks prior that didn't show DS or spina bifida. To be honest, despite my doctor not being concerned I was a wreck all night. I would love to hear other people's experiences! Thank you

If an EIF is the same as a calcium deposit, my kids both had them (common in babies of asian descent) and both were fine!

My friend had calcium spots show up with her kids and no issues at all!

What blood test did you have? I would be worried, because I am a worry wart, but in all actuality, the blood tests are very accurate, and a white spot is pretty common, so your baby is probably doing just fine! My doc said sometimes they find stuff like that, and it even resolves itself before birth.

My daughter had the same thing at 20 weeks. They followed it on ultrasound and this was before blood testing but everything was fine!

I called them IEF (intracardiac echogenic focus), but if that's what it is, it isn't a big deal. It is one of the weakest ultrasound soft markers for Down syndrome. Was the blood test that you had non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPS)? Each lab has a different name (Harmony, MaterniT21, InformaSeq, Panorama, etc). but they're all basically the same test. If so, I'd put my money on the NIPS results over a single soft marker like an IEF. So I would think your risk of Down syndrome is still very low.

@jengirl yes, I got the blood test done in my first trimester and it was non-invasive.
@mrscobee I am a worry wart too! Which is why I was so upset after my appointment but the doctor acted like it was no big deal. After getting more answers today when I called, I felt so much better. I wish he would have told me in the office how common it is!

DS had this at his 20 week ultrasound. No further ultrasounds were done and he's perfectly healthy! We did do the Harmony test for peace of mind.

My LO also had this show up on his anatomy scan. I had a rough couple days worrying about it too!! But, everything turned out fine and he is a very happy healthy 2 year old

Sister's baby had it, now he's a healthy one year old. They're very, very common. Her midwife told her that they didn't even used to report them to patients because there was usually no reason to worry people.
