My parents have the infant seat we were gifted from a shower.
We bought a convertible for one of our trips with DS and gave it to t hem.

Only my parents have a car seat and they bought it themselves. They don't have Xander that often though, so they don't really need one. They got it for when they watched him while I was in labor with Logan, but we had offered them to just install one of our car seats in their car for the couple days or for them to even drive one of our cars. They didn't like either of those options, so they bought their own car seat.

My parents - they just have a Cosco Scenera though. If they were driving the girls daily, I would've gotten them one (a nicer one).

The grandparents bought round 1 of seats....now that we have 2 kids, we'll probably offer to buy inexpensive second seats to keep at their houses.

They don't really see DD on a regular basis enough to drive her somewhere but we just put our convertible car seat in their car if they have to. It happens so rarely that it wasn't worth the cost for any of us.

They bought their own. My mom already had one, DD is the 4th grandchild. I told her she needs to check expiration date because it has to be getting close to being expired.

My MIL bought two convertible carseats (twins) for our last trip to visit her. It really helped us in traveling lighter.

My mom keeps a convertible in her car (and previously kept a base for the infant seat). With LO2 on the way, we'll probably just switch cars when she has both, but she does regular child care for me, so it's really convenient for her to have one (especially if I drop off at preschool and she picks up.)
She purchased the convertible and the base.

We bought a Britax Roundabout for the grandparents. They watch her during the week though.

We bought it. I figured it's my kid, she's doing me the favor.

@sorrycharlie: That's the same one my parents have. It has good safety ratings, so it's good enough for me for the few times they'll be using it!

We borrowed an extra base for the infant seat (along with the seat and our 2 bases). Then we bought the convertible seat for them.

They don't have seats for her. If it comes to that, I'll buy it and install it for them (they aren't really thrilled with ERF).

In over a year we've never needed them to have their own carseats. My ILs live locally but I can't imagine them babysitting or driving DS without us. My parents don't live near us and we always bring our car and/or a carseat with us.

My parents bought theirs. In laws don't have one because my kids never ride in their smoky cars.

We bought my parents their car seat for LO and MIL bought her own. We would have bought hers too, but she insisted on paying for it.

My SIL did, actually, and we use that. But i would buy them, since they're for my kid. Once in awhile my MIL has to take E somewhere with our niece and nephew

Grandparents don't have a car seat but if they were to have one I would buy it.

my mom bought one for herself as she drives my niece a lot.

We bought the Cisco Scenera for my parents and as our travel seat. It is rarely used but my parents like to drive their car when they visit us so I didn't mind the purchase.

We bought one for my mom to use. I would never have asked her to buy it herself or thought she should.

My parents gifted us the infant carseat (with base included) and I borrowed another base from a friend. When we switched to convertible we bought one for their car.

I just bought one for my mom to use. Last time we left LO with them for the weekend we almost forgot to leave ours and had to drive back! I figured it would just be easier if they had there own. Since DS is almost 3 I bought a harnessed booster that can use the 5pt harness until 50lbs and then turn into a belt positioning booster after.

I did. Had them shipped to their house before we visited because they had to pick us up from the airport. They wouldn't know anything about car seats anyway!
grapefruit / 4278 posts
We bought my parents one for when we traveled to visit them, it was easier than hauling one on the plane. Now that we live near them, they still have that one. My in-laws don't have any.

My parents bought their own (they actually bought it before we ever even bought any baby stuff ourselves!).

If they want one they can buy one. But only my mom will want one. MIL isn't allowed to drive with her (chain smoker, etc), FIL won't want to, and my dad and stepmom live so far away that they'd never need one of their own.
ETA- we would consider buying one for my mom, since she is broke, but she's bought a crapload of stuff she doesn't need already for LO, so if she can buy that junk she can buy a car seat.

They have one that we bought because they bought us a nicer one. Makes it easy for us when we travel.

We did. My parents watch LO frequently so they have one, and DH's parents live on an island accessible by passenger ferry, so we bought one to leave there rather than having to carry ours.

We did. My mom drives my son four days a week and more often than my husband does. She has the second nicest car seat that we own (maxi cosi pria) because we wanted it to be safe, comfortable, and easy for her. We install and adjust the seat as needed. My son is about 28 months (and tall) and still happily rear facing in her car (as well as ours).

We bought one, they bought one. My mom and dad are my before and aftercare, so they were necessary.
