My grandma had 10 kids.
Inlaws have 5.
Everyone else who's my age has two or less!

@LovelyPlum: Yeah I thought a lot of kids was 'normal' for a long time! I also wanted to have a lot until I got older and realized how much work it is and how expensive it is-- now 2 or 3 sounds good, but sometimes I feel bad because I know how much I appreciate all my siblings! I was talking to my mom this weekend and she said she wouldn't have minded another one after my youngest sister but my dad thought 5 was enough, which was funny since we always joke that the youngest was an accident (aren't siblings sweet?)

My MIL is one of 9.
Since the advent of reliable, available birth control though (haha) the most I personally know is 4.

My fathers wife had 6. She wanted more - when she married my father they wanted to have more, but he was so old that they decided not to.
If I had a lot of family in town and didn't have so much desire for a career, I could see having as many as my crappy fertility would allow.

My grandma had 4 kids. That is the one one I can think of.

@woodentulip: when we move to our Florida island beach home we will be a family of three! Maybe four?

I had an intern who's 1 of 12. They're mennonite. She's the only "contemporary" family I know that's that big - my dad was 1 of 9 and my mom 1 of 5; my inlaws 1 of 5 and 1 of 6; I think bigger families were more common a generation or two ago.

I know a family with 5 kids. That's about the most I have ever seen around here. Most people have 2 or 3 kids. A few have 4.

That is my age 6 kids. They have 4 adopted and then had 2 biological children.
My neighbor growing up had at least 14 kids, but as @Foodnerd81: pointed out it gets hard to keep track. My FIL is one of 8. My mom is one of 5 and my dad is one of 4. DH and I are both one of 3.

7! We have a friend that has 7 and it wouldn't be surprising if they had another! Most of our friends have 4-5... we'll probably have 3-5 ourselves.

omg this thread makes me laugh! I cannot believe the majority of you only know familes with 4 or fewer kids.
Maybe it's regional, maybe is social - but the majority of families I know have AT LEAST 4 kids, and I know plenty of families with 8 and a few of 10-12.
I am one of 6, DH is one of 5.
It will actually be really weird among those I know if I decide to "only" have 2-3 kids!!!

@Mrs. Pen: I'm one of 6, too! But none of my siblings have been crazy enough to do that. So far, I only have 6 nieces and nephews (from just the oldest 3 siblings).
But our cousins are still having tons of babies. In their case, it's religious though. No BC! Also, in their lifestyle, they kind of need the child labor.
