@Mrs D: Why do you check it weekly? Are we suppose to? I only check it when I get my quarterly statement in the mail
grapefruit / 4545 posts
@Mamaof2: probably my OCD I check all my financials weekly...just a part of my Monday morning routine I suppose! Plus I like seeing the jumps it makes after my paycheck (every 2 weeks)

Ugh, me. Mine updates automatically via Mint so anytime I open the app I can see the balance. I'm just telling myself about what a great deal in getting because prices are so low now.

Exciting day on the market. My husband sent me an email telling me to watch the markets.
pomegranate / 3973 posts
I only check mine when I get quarterly statements. There's nothing I can do about it, and it doesn't matter for another 30 years anyways so not worth the worry?
It would be nice to watch the jumps-up though.

I looked on Friday and it was sad. So probably gonna avoid it until the market turns back up
honeydew / 7504 posts
@josina: Same. My husband checks his frequently and gets himself all in a tizzy about it. The market's gonna do a lot of stuff between now and when I retire. Not worth the anxiety to me.

I never really check mine. To me it is such a long-term savings that it isn't worth the stress and anxiety to see all the little ups and downs along the way.

I check mine like once in a blue moon and not going to start today. Like @littlebug: I have some time before I retire.
I'm sure if I was at work, a lot of people would be talking about it so I'm glad im not at work.

I have lived through worse...2007 to 2008 was a doozy, so these three days I am not even thinking about it.
grapefruit / 4545 posts
@looch: thats very true...in 2007 I only had my one 401K (had only had one employer at that time) and I remember how proud I was when I left that job that the balance was high enough I didnt have to roll it over...and then BOOM...so at least its not that bad this time!

I don't ever look at mine! I glance at my quarterly statements but that's all. The market will rise and fall a zillion more times before I need it, it's not worth worrying about.

I never look at mine (well, ok I probably do quarterly when I get an email from Fidelity). I'm not retiring for decades. This too shall pass.
But, times like these are why I'm also not relying 100% on a 401(k). You never know when an up, or a down, will happen!

Avoiding, it'll come back... Why be a downer on myself?! Ignorance is bliss for me

Ugh now I really want to see what the damage is, but also don't want to look!

I learned my lesson in 2008. I check mine a few times a year and that's it. But if course I'm going to check later now that I've read this thread.

401k is too long term to worry about. However I am crying about my stocks.

@plantains: this! If I had the extra $$, I'd be buying today!!

I haven't opened my statements since 2008 lol. Like @mrsjazz: , I learned my lesson . I look at it once in a blue moon online. But thanks for the heads up so I don't look today!

I never check my 401k lol, maybe once a year?? I figure by the time I need to use the money a few highs and lows wont matter!
clementine / 849 posts
Yeah the only time I see my 401k balance is at tax time. I'm not going to retire for over 30 years - why bother?!
coconut / 8483 posts
@mrsjyw: hahaha same!
In Canada so don't have 401ks, but I'm avoiding looking at our rsps and investments. We are only 27.... It's got lots of time to come back up!
cantaloupe / 6869 posts
Meh, it wasn't so bad for me. I also wish I had some spare cash to throw in the market right now because this is the perfect time to jump in.

We were waiting to see what would happen to the Chinese markets...
I know it sucks to see your funds drop but unless you're planning on retiring in the next 5 years, it's not a big deal.

@BandDmommy: DH thinks shit is still going down and we can wait a few days or a week before buying. I'm too impatient

I had a super tiny 403B when the market did its big downturn in 2008. My company's financial advisor called to tell me not to freak out. I told him that I was 22 and not particularly concerned about a short-term dip in the market (I'm sure he was having less fun talking to the older people at the company). That's kind of how I feel now.

I think if you're prone to panic, then avoiding your 401k would likely be a good idea -- though any up/down movement is from the previous business day and not from today's market movement.
@Freckles: I was trying to decide if I should buy today or wait a bit too! I decided to buy a small position today of something on my watch list.

@Freckles: Sadly I think your hubs is right and there's plenty of time left to buy before missing your chance.

Meh, no not worried. I haven't funded my rollover ira yet though soooo anxious to get home from vacation and buy!
