Who will be the next President?

This has been a topic all weekend IRL. Doctors, teachers, nurses, all voting for trump and stating it. Let alone those who are embarrasssed to admit it. I have been saying he would win Ohio but I'm starting to think it may be more than that....

@nana87: thanks for the Guardian link. If Trump wins I feel like behavior like this will become accepted.

@LibbyLou: I went on a local parenting forum this weekend to maybe try and argue someone out of it and give support to others in the same boat. Uuuugh. I shouldn't have baited the trolls. I think I've totally wasted my time, AND I feel like I need to wash my mind out with soap.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: it's so horrifying, peaceful protest is such a fundamental part of democracy. I just saw this too-- https://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/obama-meets-kid-cerebral-palsy-kicked-out-of-trump-rally trump supporters were kicking a child's wheelchair-- wtf??!

@Anya: I need to join that group. I need some inspiration. How did you join? Did a friend add you? I searched for it but I don't see the one you are talking about but then I heard that it's a secret private group.

I really really hope HRC wins after reading this thread.

I might be in my own bubble but really do think HRC will win. I'm hoping...

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: same. It's not a Trump presidency that really scares me, it's the precedent it sets for future behavior.

I'm pretty confident HRC will win, probably with over 300EV. I read electoral-vote.com and PEC and they haven't had her below 270 since the day she got the nom. I wish it would be more of a blow-off, I'm furious at the Comey and FBI, and I am anxious that something catastrophic is going to happen, but overall I'm keeping my head. The SEPTA strike is over which will be HUGE for Philly and the suburbs, and Latino voting is WAY up. I'm not discounting Trump pulling some trick, but it'd really have to be a perfect storm for him to win.

    honeydew / 7504 posts

@lovehoneybee: Yes, the resolution of the SEPTA strike makes me feel much better about the situation in PA! That had me super nervous.

I just really feel like, no matter who wins, this election season has opened up a very ugly can of worms and this country is in a downward hate spiral. I hope that HRC wins and can pull us back together. I'm planning to wear my Wire and Honey Stand for Love tee to the polls tomorrow.

@littlebug: I hope so, but I have a lot of trouble seeing where we fall after. Donald has been screaming that the election is rigged, and Hillary is a criminal ("Crooked Hillary!" "Lock her up!" "2nd Amendment people...."). I really don't see how she'll be able to bring those people back around to reality. This election has been really upsetting to watch, especially since many members of my immediate family support him. I disagreed with them over McCain and Romney, but I don't think I'll be able to get over the Trump rift. If they honestly believe he is the right person to be in charge of the country...that's politics I just can't move past, period. I think Hillary is going to have a terribly hard time uniting the country. But, she's spent 30 years being smeared and being knocked down and getting back up (with high job approval ratings), and I'm eager to see what a "Mom-In-Chief" can manage to do

I am just so ready for this to be over. I got extremely upset with someone yesterday because they live in a battleground/red leaning state and voted 3rd party. I was like, do you even understand you essentially voted for Trump??? and her response was, "I dislike both of them." I almost lost it on her.

@ShootingStar: I am having a hard time with third party voters or abstainers too. A lot of them are in firmly blue states so say it doesn't matter but I get scared that too many people will think that. This election has already had a lot of "that could never happen" moments actually happen. I just think if you hate Hillary but think she would still do a better job than Donald, you have to vote for her. I can't wait for it to be over.

@lovehoneybee: Ugh, yes. I have many Republican family members who I disagree with on a number of subjects, but I still respected them and their opinion. But voting for someone like Trump? Telling the world that his behavior and words are okay? I'll never be able to respect that kind of hatred.

  14. lovehoneybee

    GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts

@Adira: Yeah...if you think it's okay for ANYONE, let alone the PRESIDENT to say/think it's okay to "grab her by the pussy" or make fun of disabled peoples, or call anyone criminals and racists, or any of the other deplorable things he's said...you're just not someone I want to be around my children, or me. I'm fully okay with having policy differences and opposing viewpoints, in fact I think it's an integral part of a well-functioning democracy, but he's just...geez. (ETA: And I refuse to brush that off as "locker room talk")

  15. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@lovehoneybee: Yes yes yes!!! His type of language is just so disgusting and for people to think that that type of language is okay is just horrifying to me! I had someone just last week try to tell me that "guys just talk like that" with reference to the sexual assault bragging and I was appalled! None of the men in MY family talk like that! And we shouldn't let ANYONE get away with talking like that!

Overall my feelings about the election, though, can be boiled down to this:

I'm going to stop after work and pick up a bottle of champagne and a bottle of scotch. One of them will be emptied by Wednesday morning.

@Adira: @lovehoneybee: the sad thing is so many are overlooking his talk. All they can say is HRC is a crook. I say Maybe so, but Donald is too, he just hasn't been in office to get caught yet.

  19. BSB

hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts

@Adira: I posted on FB something about writing Bernie and double checking if they can in their state. DH's relative had to post that Hillary was a crook. I just couldn't remain silent anymore. I told them what I thought and that most of the DH's family will hate me for voting HRC. A few commented that they don't hate me. Then I pointed out that one of the family members posted a while ago about wanting to choke a coworker for volunteering for HRC. I asked her isn't that hate? Her defense... but you are family! Ugh!

I don't know how I'm going to see these in laws for Thanksgiving and put a smile on my face if Trump wins. Even if HRC wins, I'll never hear the end of it. Luckily, it isn't constant and they try to be respectful at times.

Both of my parents voted for Trump, and I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around it. We have voted for different candidates before, but this time it is different. I just don't understand how anyone could vote for him because, to me, he is horrifying.

I have to believe HRC will win. I've only ever lived in swing states (PA, OH, and FL) and mostly in Republican-leaning communities, so I do see a lot of pro-Trump signage around and on my newsfeed. But I know a decent number of Republicans who are voting for Clinton this time around. DH's entire family is for Trump, though, and his mom even pulled the "locker room talk" line after that gross leaked tape. My husband was ready to hit the roof over that - like, normal, decent men do not say something like that, period. DH and I have always disagreed with his family on politics, but it was a matter of policy. This is different and I will never think of many of these family members the same way again. My respect for their judgment and "moral compass" is gone.

@avivoca: I said the same thing to DH about either celebrating or drowning our sorrows. We bought 2 six-packs of beer tonight and I am making pigs-in-a-blanket and pizza dip for our election night viewing tomorrow.

@keepcalmcarrie: Agreed. People who are acting like this is just a policy issue frustrate me at this point. This is a human decency issue.

    Sigh.

  28. Silva

@keepcalmcarrie: @Mrs. Lion: I have a few family members who are openly voting trump and they are the same people who keep making comments on Facebook about respecting others political opinions, not ending relationships based on politics, etc. I want to say to them "I'm sorry, but by voting for this man you are, at the very least, showing that you okay with/willing to tolerate blatant misogyny and racism. I absolutely can end relationships based on that. This might just be about a Supreme Court nomination or some fiscal policy beliefs to you, but to me this election has become about whether or not I am an equal citizen in this country."

@Silva: For my family members openly supporting Trump, they are the same ones who have been at the forefront of all of the Obama conspiracies over the last 8 years. It isn't a huge jump to believe all of the ones about Clinton. They literally believe that she is immeasurably more, for lack of a better word, deplorable than he is. It is so bizarre to me.

I did hear a really great podcast that helped me kind of start to see where the Trump supporters are coming from. In my opinion they are completely wrong and have a very very narrow world view, but it was interesting to see from their perspective. This was probably the more rational supporters though...not the violent ones wearing t-shirts about hanging reporters.

    blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts

@Mrs. Lion: narrow minded is right. Someone called me close minded on Facebook because I said trump supporters wanted to rob women of their votes with their "repeal the 19th campaign". She said I was being very close minded. Umm okay? They did actually say that... so... isn't that fact, not close mindedness? I can't even wrap my head around the way they think anymore. It's exhausting.

@Mrs. Lion: I think that it is critical that we understand what motivates people to vote for Trump because the emotions and anger behind it are not going to go away and we will just end up with another Trump.

I feel moderately confident that Clinton will win. 538 gives her a 70% chance this morning and while that isn't 100%, I feel ok about those odds.

    ETA: 71.8% actually
