Post man?
Garbage man?
UPS driver?
What will you give them?

No. I never really understood that practice I guess. They're doing their jobs. They are probably a bit busier now, but everyone has a busy season at work (mostly). I just don't think of those as tip-able professions.
(Also I couldn't pick any of these ppl out of a lineup. I've never seen our postman or garbage ppl. And there seems to be different fedex ppl all the time).

@Mae: I agree, I never knew this was a "thing" until becoming active online. I've never known anyone to tip these professions in my area of living. My mom did use to leave cookies for our mailwoman..but she was a neighbor (small town) so it was a neighborly gesture, I don't even know what our mail person looks like.

@Mae: I have never tipped before either but every year I think about it and wonder if I should.....
Also just read an article on NBC about this topic, hence the post!

@LuLu Mom: lol right. seems more appropriate in a small town where you might know your post man and maybe even run into him/her at the grocery store. All I know about our postman is that if there is a car parked on the street within 15 feet of our mailbox s/he won't deliver mail, and that if s/he can get a box into our mailbox (even by force of sledgehammer, requiring near use of jaws of life to remove) rather than walking to our porch to deliver it, s/he will choose that option

I don't think I will tip any of these? I also did not think they were "tipping" professions. ours change regularly too...and I don't utilize UPS/FedEx often anyway.
I was horrified when someone posted on facebook about remembering to tip your groomer. when I first brought him to the groomer we use (petsmart!) my MIL was a regular there and assured me I didn't need to tip. BIL/SIL said the same. I was like ok. then four years later..I read that I'm supposed to?! horrified and embarrassed. not sure I can go back lol.

I won't tip any of them-- our mailman is the only consistent person, every one else changes weekly!
We do a box of chocolates for our mailman!

@sorrycharlie: we don't tip at our groomer's (petsmart), we've tried adn they don't take it at ours, they have us pay at the store registers too.

I think just our mail carrier and the woman I go to for my nails.

Wow...I'm pretty surprised at how many people don't tip! I understand they're doing their jobs, but I think it's just a nice bonus for those who probably won't see one this time of year.
We'll be tipping our postal carrier and garbage man. I won't be tipping the FedEx or UPS guy b/c we do have a different one come to the house every time a package is delivered.

@mrsjyw: oh thankkkk god. lol. we pay at the registers, too! the weird thing is that the chick that posted it is a groomer at (a different) petsmart, so I was kind of alarmed!

We tip everyone! They are the same people year after year so I think it's something nice to do.

I don't tip anyone at Christmas other than someone who may give us better than average service at a restaurant. If they deserve it, they get a hefty "Christmas bonus" tip from us.
We don't go anywhere regularly (no regular hair person, nail person, spa person, etc) and we maybe see our UPS or mail person once a month. I don't understand why we would tip them....
@sorrycharlie: right. I don't work in a "tipping" profession so I don't expect a "tip" at Christmas (or a bonus for that matter...) and don't think that others in the same type of job expect one either.

the only person we tip is our dog walker, but she is practically a family member at this point.

We'll give a small bonus to our regular babysitter (every other Thursday and I love her), our house cleaner and my hairdresser. Really just people that we know and see consistently.

@Mae: I agree. I have never seen our garbage people. UPS comes at different times of the day, so different drivers. We usually have the same postman, but I have never left a tip before. I mean that is their job. No one tips me for coming to work.

We tip:
Postman
Garbage guys (private company, not a city service)
UPS guy (I order everything I can via Amazon and we have a long driveway…so he earns his tip!)
Lawn care guy
Pet Sitter
Daycare teachers
I thought tipping mail carriers was the norm (?) We get USPS/UPS/garbage/lawn guys a bag of nice chocolates and a $10 gift card to Starbucks/Dunkin’ Donuts - nothing crazy.
Note: Our mailman just left a holiday card in our mailbox, so I feel sort of obligated to give him something now, haha, which was probably his plan!

@yoursilverlining: aww that is so nice of your postman though! I haven't run into our new postman yet, but our old postwoman was a WITCH. omg.
squash / 13208 posts
@yoursilverlining: Yeah our garbage men left a note on the trash can last year...I guess they wanted a gift? haha

How exactly would one go about tipping your service workers? I can understand putting an envelope in the mailbox, but do you tape an envelope to the garbage can? We're always out the door before the garbage man/mail workers/UPS people arrive, so giving it in person is kind of out of the question.

@sorrycharlie: @mrsjyw: I tip the groomer at Petco/Petsmart! Even if he just gets his nails done, I will since he can be a bit difficult.
We will be tipping our cleaning person and our laundry delivery person (picks up and drops off and we're in a 4th floor walk up). I don't see Fedex/UPS at home so I won't be tipping them or the USPS person.

I guess I need to tip my mailman because I get so many packages. And how would you tip them or the garbage man? Tape it out there and hope nobody steals it? They come when I'm at work...
I am planning on giving one weeks' pay to my daycare workers.
