I work 8-5 at a minimum (sometimes more) with an hour commute on either end. I can workout on weekends pretty easily, but during the work week, it is so hard. When do you do it? What workouts do you do?

I go to boot camp or go lift weights at 4:45 am so I don't miss any time with LO.
ETA: I am NOT a morning person, so I do everything I can to set myself up for success the night before: coffee maker programmed, I sleep in half my clothes and have the other half laid out, water bottle in the fridge, shoes and keys together, set two alarms.

I run three miles T,W,TH,F and S. Sunday is 6 miles. Monday is my rest day. I teach and get home at 4:00 so I spend time with her,eat dinner and then we go run at 7. She goes with me in a jogging stroller. I'm a single mom, so she has to come with me since I don't have family nearby. Also, I used to just wing, with no set schedule and I slacked big time, making it like 3 days a week. This summer I came up with a schedule so I can't skip out on it.

I've been going in the morning before work. It's the best time bc the gym isn't crowded and I don't miss time with LO or really DH since they're still sleeping. I do 30 min of cardio on a machine and some weights and stretching. There for about an hr. Lucky the gym is only 8 min from the house!

I tried working out at lunch, but that was a disaster because it just took way too long.

I dont have my LO yet, but the plan is 5:45am crossfit classes 3 days a week and one class on the weekends. A lot of moms at my job work out on lunch.

@looch: yeah I don't always have time for a full lunch break.

@DillonLion: i read somewhere that you should schedule it like a meeting and you'll "make" the time when needed.

I work out at home after at goes to sleep. Downside is I don't eat dinner till 8/830 at night. I do Insanity or Jillian DVDs

I've been running after LO is relaxing after bath and before bed. I only manage to get in 1/2 hour-45 minutes, though. I don't know how else to fit it in. My husband is usually gone by 5:30 am and often earlier, so it's not feasible to do mornings at this point. I guess I could do it after LO goes down to sleep, but that pushes my bed time awfully late after showering, and I need a lot of sleep.

DH and I switch off mornings at the gym. We go before DD is awake.

Following . . . I'm only pregnant and struggling with working out while working. I leave for work around 8am and get home around after 8pm (I'm a lawyer so there is a lot of variation, but billing an average of 9 hours a day usually means being away from home 12 hours or so). My most successful stretch was when I worked out at lunch and just calendared it as "PT"--I think my bosses respected the appointment since it sounded medical-ish (and I did have some PT to do). Mornings can work for a while, but it's so tempting to hit snooze instead.

@hotchildinthecity: Yes, I tend to agree, but the problem, at least in my workplace, is that no one views blocked time as "unavailable" because everyone is so overscheduled. I think part of the problem, for me at least, is that I can't consistently find a block of time that is open.

@grizz: @MsMamaBear: Your workout schedules are seriously impressive! Good for you for making it work!
No advice here, but I am following. I have a similar 8-5 + long commute schedule and have been putting off getting started because i can't for the life of me figure out how to fit in working out without losing an hour to an hour and a half of sleep.
pear / 1563 posts
I go in the morning at 6am 2 days a week, and once on the weekend. I'm not where I'd like to be fitress wise yet but even getting back to it 3x a week made a huge difference, and it's a schedule I can handle.

I work 9-5 and my commute is anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour. A few times a week we get home, walk the dog, she eats, and then we go for a run in the jogging stroller. On Saturdays, we go to the gym and I run on the treadmill and attend a barre class while she plays in the playroom.

I take 30 mins 3-4 times a week to work out at home (always at night, after LO goes to bed). I have weights and a bike, and sometimes do a workout DVD. Works for me.

I'm a little against the grain, because I don't have a set workout time, but I am committed to getting, at minimum, 10,000 steps and 25 flights of stairs on my Fitbit every day. So instead of "working out" in the course of my day I take the stairs and the long way around. It works out to the equivalent of around 4 miles a day. I have a crazy goal of not breaking my streak for the rest of this pregnancy. And with my job, some days it is really easy and some days it is really hard. (I've been doing it consistently since 7/13.)
And bonus, DH has been away for two weeks, and he asked me (14* week pregnant), if I lost weight. I haven't, but at least my thighs aren't spreading with my belleh!
* Holy cow, I actually calculated wrong. How different the second time around is! Woo-hoo for an extra week!

@grizz: almost the exact same thing.
Never been a morning person - I could sleep until 10 if uninterrupted! But this is important to me so I've been really pushing myself and it's consistent now. 3x a week I am up at 4:50 or 5am to hit bodypump or bootcamp class, and then get my other two workout sessions in during the weekend. I hate it and it's hard but I do it and I'm proud. It has gotten easier with time, and like you I have to plan for it and not talk myself out of it. I am definitely worried for when this semester starts and I have FT nursing courses 5 days a week AND working 20 hrs a week. But I'm determined!

I work about 8:30-4:30, and then go to the gym I am lucky to have onsite at work 4:30-5:30. Occasionally I will go during lunch instead but I prefer to wait to the end of the day so I don't have to shower. I'm only 7 miles from daycare so I can pick LO up before close.

I will add I am solo 4 days a week so going to the gym isn't an option for me, sadly!

5:30 am boot camp MWF. It sucks to get up early, but I get it over with and it energizes me for the rest of the day.

I struggled with this for a long time and now that my kids are slightly older and more independent I am making the time for myself.
Sun/Tues/Thur - 50 mins Bar
Mon/Wed/Fri - 25 mins elliptical
If DH will be home in the evening I will wait till he gets home so he can interact with the kids but if he isn't then the kids can play in the basement or watch their Kindles while I exercise.
I have been unhappy with my body for a long time and if feels good to finally be doing something about it!
My 3 yr old DD loves to do Bar Method with me - its adorable!

I'm in the same boat - never any time to work out! No time at lunch. Some good ideas in here for sure.
I sometimes try to walk more, even though its not a "real" workout. I walk more in the office. And sometimes skip my shuttle to the office from the train and walk instead! Or I walk really far to get lunch. Is walking more an option?

my work has a small gym downstairs, so i try to go 2-3 times during the week. not that that happens. and it's only been a month since i joined. so, um, yeah i need suggestions also.

I go Monday, Tuesday after LO is down for the night. Usually around 8pm. I try to go to a class when I can to keep myself accountable.
I try to go Th/Fr (wfh days) at lunch. If not, then it's after DS goes down.

@hellobeeboston: definitely, only that it is 103 out most days this time of year here. Hopefully it will start to cool off in the next month or two

For those of you who say you aren't morning people: My husband is NOT a morning person, but he was committed to making the morning work out work because it's really the only time we can do it. He read a really interesting book on habits and how you can successfully create them - basically the idea is that a habit = trigger + action + reward. For a morning gym trip, the trigger is your alarm going off, the action is getting your butt out of bed and into the gym, and the reward is whatever you want. For DH, it's me waiting for him at home with a giant mug of coffee; for me, it's the fact that DH gets DD up and fed on my work out days so I get to come home to a hot shower rather than a crying, hungry toddler.
It is not fun or easy to get up early every day, but it only took about 3-4 weeks to settle into the habit. Now I LOVE my gym mornings.

I work out on my lunch break. My gym is really close to work. There is NO way I would have the motivation to wake up early enough to do it in the AM... I admire those on here that do!

@bisous: Thanks, it came after I got a kick in the butt from my Facebook accountability group! LOL! That's what I needed though.

I think this is such a struggle but I agree that habits can become self-perpetuating. I WOH FT usually gone from the house 8-5 including daycare drop off and pick up. DH is usually out of the house by 5:30 so getting to the gym early is not realistic for me. But I do get up around 5:30 and do a 30 minute Jillian something 2 mornings a week and a longer one on Sundays. I recently decided to up to 3 mornings a week and this is the first week. Evenings do not work for me so this is the best/only time.
I was not able to do this until LO was older, sleeping better, and waking up at a more consistent time. (18 months) Last fall if she woke up early she watched Elmo on you tube while I worked out. Now she has a toddler clock so I know when she will wake up. So I work out, shower and dry my hair and then she is up at 6:45.

I haaaaaate getting up neatly and am not a morning person but I had to accept that there is no other time during the day to consistently get a good workout in . So I go M-F at 6 am and alternate between strength training with dumbells and running 3 miles.

You guys are my heroes! I'm sitting here eating a king size Kit Kat bar while reading about you amazing moms...

I work downtown, so I just suit up at lunch and go for a run, usually 3-4 miles (although it's shortened/gotten slower now that I'm pregnant). Occasionally I'll go to the racquetball court at the top of my building and do a bodyweight workout. Daycare doesn't open until 7:30, and I have to be at work at 8, so there is no way that I can workout in the mornings. DH and I will usually do a run together on the weekends with DD in the stroller. I used to take the time twice a week to do a Pure Barre class, and I miss it.
