Has anyone relocated for work? My husband and I both work for the same company that just opened a new operations center in Phoenix. Our company offers fantastic relocation benefits, I guess I'm just a little nervous because I've never lived anywhere else. We have spent time in Phoenix, especially DH for spring training. I should add we live in Missouri, and our new positions would be fairly significant promotions. Any tips? Advice?

My BIL and SIL did this to canada. They didn't like the cold (big change from Florida) and after about two years they moved back to be closer to family.

We relocated just this past summer, from Texas to NYC (and now to NJ) for my husband's job. It was probably a little more stressful for us, because it was his job only, so I had a *very small* amount of time to find a job in a field that was over-saturated here (teaching/school librarian), AND I had to get all my new state certifications, and we didn't decide to move until May (super late to start looking for teaching jobs in a new state for the next school year).
But I was tenacious, and lucky, and got a job offer on my 3rd interview, so it all worked out.
I would say, if BOTH of you can transfer, AND you get a significant raise---why not? If you end up not liking it, you can always move again in 2-3 years.
Now that we know just how expensive living here is, we probably aren't going to stay in this area more than 2-3 years, then we'll move on to maybe California (also expensive, but at least better weather), or Atlanta, or back to Texas.
Edited to say: we were also planning our wedding while relocating, interviewing, looking for new job, starting new jobs, etc. FUN!

DH relocated after we married. The relo package was helpful since we were selling his house and buying one together. The new pffice transition did not go well at first, but he is much better now.

We've relocated for DHs job three times in three years. Don't know Phoenix but my advice is to research all their relo benefits and reimbursements and have a system for keeping receipts etc to submit. We had to go through a specific process to use an approved realtor to access some benefits, they reimbursed a housing cost that our bank was going to discount so our bank switched the discount so we could receive it off something else. stuff like that! We relocated for my new job about 4 years ago. We had a relocation company help us with our move so it was pretty easy. My company paid for one car to be shipped across the country but the other car, I had to pay out of pocket (about $1000). We got a month of temporary housing.
When I plan to move back east, I'll, also, have to find a job that has a relocation package.
@LinzR: If you accept the job, will they allow you to go there for one weekend to go house or apartment hunting? That might help you get in the mind frame of moving there.
