I have heard "The Giving Tree" is a Christian allegory.... So I never saw it as sexist, I think the tree is a Christ figure. ?

So I was reading this old thread and I feel the need to defend Goodnight Moon! I love it and I read it to DS every night.
I look at the book from the perspective that the bunny is saying goodnight to everything in his room. I especially love how he changes positions on each page and you can see that he is facing one of the items he is saying goodnight to. Kids are silly and say silly things, like "goodnight nobody goodnight mush". I can picture a little kid saying something like that. I also like that the pages get gradually darker. Anyways, that's just my personal perspective on the book!

@mrs. wagon: I don't like Goodnight Moon either. We were gifted 2 copies!

I also can't stand Guess How Much I Love You. The word "nutbrown" is just awful .
And my BIL's girlfriend gave us her actual copy of her favorite childhood book, and it is the strangest thing ever. I can't even get through it it's so weird. I pick on her all the time about it. It's called A Lot of Otters.

@BananaPancakes: What the??? That cover pic is so weird and kinda scary!

We ordered this book bc DH thought it was cute, and he is covered in tattoos. Well, we both read it and it is AWFUL. Its all about how the Dad is always going on adventures without the family and how he is never home. The only good part is that the Dad has lots of stories to tell, where all his tattoos came from. Womp.

@citymouse: LOL that cover is kind of intriguing! It does make me want to check the book out.

I don't like the Berenstain Bears books. I find them preachy and annoying. Plus the mother is always all knowing while dad is a clueless buffoon.

I hate the runaway bunny. That little bunny is a jerk. I told LO if he ran away that many times I would not chase after him.
My mom just bought us a bunch of Sophie the Giraffe books since LO loves his Sophie. They are so french. One is called Sophie's Busy Day and it's awesome. Sophie has an alarm clock and wakes up early so she can clean the living room, pick apples, and go grocery shopping. I hope LO wants to be responsible like Sophie.

@MsLipGloss: I can beat that, I was given FOUR copies of goodnight moon

@cmomma17: I cannot stop laughing about this!! I would tell my kid the same thing.

I know many people love thi sbook but I find it weird towards the the end. "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be"
honeydew / 7444 posts
I got this book as a gift and it's the worst book ever. The worst part is that LO has loved this book since she was 10 months old!

What a funny thread, even if it is old.
My mom got me a book with short stories about the adventures of two mice. In one story the guy mouse gets drunk from a bottle of beer he found. Then he gets picked on by some cats, and his wife(?) beats up the cats and takes him home and then vows to never drink again. That is just one of the 20 or so short stories. They are hilariously bad.

This thread is so funny!
I used to like Love You Forever, but ever since MIL went on and on about how much she loves this book I just picture her as the old woman trying to sneak into DH's room to rock him to sleep one last time...

Brown Bear. Maybe it's because I teach Pre-k but I HATE this book. Makes no sense to me!
@mrs. wagon: And the colors don't help! The book makes my head hurt!

@mrskc: I agree. I don't mind it either. My son is 19 months and every night as part of his bedtime routine he has to say goodnight to the light, his books, his toys, his art work, his paper lantern, etc etc etc... It's adorable even if it makes bedtime 5-10 minutes delayed
grapefruit / 4817 posts
@banana: @mrskc: It's super odd. Basically the moon loses his baby (the Kid on the cover), then cries a bunch and the kid floats away on them in a cardboard box. Then some otters come and help the moon find her baby. I got nothin.
@Freckles: This just made me lol!

I LOVED The Rainbabies as a kid...but now that I think of it, it's sort of sad/odd. An older couple that can't have kids find a bunch of miniature babies after a rain storm, grow to love them, a weasel or something tries to take them, and then the fairy comes back to get her kids but gives them a regular sized/human baby (if I remember correctly).
I still love the book, but I'm betting my mom was glad I never questioned the infertility aspect or the part about why the fairy left her babies or where she got a human baby from?! Or that I never worried I'd be traded. Haha!

I can't be the only one who hates don't let the pigeon drive the bus? Who thought it was a good idea to have the child yell, "no!" Multiple times per page?!?!
honeydew / 7444 posts
@BananaPancakes: I always try to hide the book, but it keeps coming back!! I'm sure it'll be a great book down the road when it's time to potty train, but it is just a ridiculously boring "story".

@sorrycharlie: Hahaa, i love the pigeon! We recently moved onto "The Duckling Gets A Cookie?!" As much as i like how animated he gets, he is one whiny pigeon!!

@RubyCali: my MIL rubbed DH's feet when he was sick while I was in bed with him during a two families Thanksgiving many years ago at my parents' house. Still creeps me out after all these years.

This is one from my childhood- I f'ing HATE the book: Thingumajigs Book of Manners. My dad's mom gave it to us, and it is the most condescending book with scary illustrations. I'm pretty easy going about most books, but if I could burn every copy of this book, I would... along with the audio cassette that we were tortured with growing up. Unfortunately the words are stuck in my psyche forever.

@autumnlove: I also hate Pat the Bunny because of the smell . . . but LO likes the peekaboo page, so it stays. For now . . .
@cmomma17: *jinkies*
My FIL gave my LO a book called Farts in the Wild, and it has a sound thingy on it that (of course) plays the sounds for all of the different farts. I hate Hate HATE this book . . . but LO loves the sounds. *sigh*

Glad to see this thread resurrected. My husband works at a publishing company and is always bringing home stuff, that we don't necessarily pick out. Recently I discovered one with a tiger on the cover is actually about the FOOD CHAIN. So that was awesome to discover that when my son picked it for his bedtime story. All the cute animals eating each other. And then there is one about this baby who has no parents, so he has to change his own diapers and make his own bottles, and then he finds some random to be his mom, and they find another random to be the dad? I have to look at this book and report back with the name so you can all avoid it.

Aww, don't hate on Thomas! They weren't always licensed characters, they orginated as a series by Reverend Audry, those are actually not bad.

@BananaPancakes: Haha, DS borrowed A Lot of Otters from the library and we both thought it was a weird book, lol.

@mrsbookworm: oh em gee I freaking hate those bears. So sexist and preachy and stupid. Mama Bear is always right about everything--what a sanctimonious bore! (Someone I once vented to about them actually found and sent me an academic article about how awful they are!)
But I remember loving them as a kid! I think it was the bright colors, and especially that sick pink treehouse. I mean, that treehouse is awesome.
watermelon / 14206 posts
@MsMamaBear: I hate Brown Bear, too, but only because I'm SO SICK of it. DS has had it crop up every year in school since he was 2. I think this year, first grade, is the first year I haven't seen him bring home some sort of art project related to the book. We own the book, too.

@sotomorrow: I remember that book from being little and thought it was creepy then too!

LO LOOOOVES Goodnight Moon. I have to read it 5 - 6 times a night. I think the story is odd but no hate for the book. I think I'll Love you Forever is freaky.

@Dandelion: LOL! I'm lucky we don't have it. I planto hide it if anyone ever does buy it for us!
