The can looks fine and was still sealed. When I opened it the soup looked and smelled fine.
I am making pot roast for dinner tonight. I need two cans of soup, and one of the cans that I have has a sell by date of Jan 2013.

i wouldn't. the minute i get the thought in my head that something might not be fresh, it turns my stomach! even if milk is perfectly good if i think about it too much, i have to toss it. but maybe i'm crazy.

Is it a "sell by" date and not an expiration date? If so, as long as it smelled/looked ok and was going to be cooked, it's probably fine.
"Canned goods. Highly acidic foods like tomato sauce can keep 18 months or more. Low-acid foods like canned green beans are probably risk-free for up to five years."

I usually go by the "Does it look fine, smell fine, and taste fine?" method when it come to food that is past the date, but this is two years past the date.

@MaryM: Agreed.
I wouldn't mind using it so long as it looks completely normal, with no external damage to the can!

I wouldn't but I am weird with exp dates!
google says that Canned Soup lasts for 1-2 Years past the sell by date - so according that I wouldnt

I would if I was just eating it. I have a stomach of steel. If it was something DH might eat, I might get another can.

I had a question about jello and found a website that says how long past the expiration date you can eat something. According to that, you can do vegetable soup for 1-2 years past the printed date....so still sketchy.

@NeekieRose: But according to your chart, they should be used within 2 years after their "best before" date.
A "sell by" date would be earlier than the "best before." (so I would expect the food would last longer from the earlier date)

@NCSUchick27: Agreed. The smell/look test is fairly common in our house and *knock on wood* we've never experienced any food poisoning issues however, 2 years past with something cream based especially would be a no for me!

@NCSUchick27: totally. I normally don't even look at expiry dates on canned goods.
pomelo / 5607 posts
I would, but probably not while pregnant just in case. But expiration dates are actually "best by" dates. As in, it might not taste as good (chips might have gone stale, etc), but it's almost always fine to eat well after the date. Canned good especially. They have to put something, but it doesn't mean it's bad after that. I've read a lot of articles about that (of course, I didn't save any of them), so it's not something I worry about. Even milk I'll drink a few days after the date, IF it seems 100% fine. (And I trust my sense of smell.)

I would without a doubt. And judging by the answers here, I am totally disgusting. Wanna come over for dinner?

I'm a food scientist with canned goods experience. The flavor might not hold up two years past the best by date but it won't hurt you. I'd try and it decide.
clementine / 995 posts
I ended up using it. Everything I read online said that it should be ok. Also, I am just cooking for DH and myself. We have no LOs and I am not pregnant.

@NCSUchick27: Will you make sure to post tomorrow just so that we know you survived eating two year old soup?
pomegranate / 3244 posts
I would've done exactly as you--smells fine, looks fine, I'm using it. But then again I also cut the moldy bits off of cheese and bread and eat it, so I'm obviously disgusting
nectarine / 2784 posts
I wouldn't. It's probably fine but I personally will let things like that go about 6 months over max.
bananas / 9899 posts
I would not. It probably wouldn't hurt if I consumed it by accident, but once I know that it's 2 years past it's date I wouldn't be able to stomach it haha.
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
My husband probably would but I just can't. Even if the milk is one day past the date and smells fine I cant. Lol

@NCSUchick27: I totally eat past the sell-by date too, and love this thread!!
Two years though, you are braver than me! I don't have a food science background... just a general cheapness/laziness + iron stomach.
pomegranate / 3643 posts
When I worked at a homeless shelter, the food pantry would pass out canned goods six months past sell by date.
Post tomorrow and let us know how it goes!

Lol my first thought was no. But if I had my heart set on what I was about to make, & if it smelled/ looked okay- I probably would still use it. Good luck
