We "eloped" instead of getting engaged (we told our families--well it's more complicated than that but that's the simple version) and then we got married "for real."
If we did it again I would pay for it myself and just invite close friends and family. Family is HUGE so it would still be big (50 people maybe instead of 100). It would be outdoors during the daytime not indoors at night. I would go cheaper on the food and venue but still get a live band (they were amazing!) and a really great dress.
I wouldn't elope again--I am such a family person--I use weddings as an excuse to actually see family. I am actually excited about my brother's upcoming wedding in large part because we get to see all the family!

We had a JOP wedding 11 months before our fancy wedding because of visa/immigration issues and if I had to choose I'd pick the big wedding. I loved our wedding so much and loved declaring my love in a room filled with people I loved. DH and I often talk about how special our wedding was, and don't often talk about our first ceremony. The JOP ceremony was special, but it was missing something.....namely 150 of our closest friends.

We got married at city hall in San Francisco so we didn't have to deal with getting marriage license in South Carolina on short notice (we bumped wedding up a year because we found out I was pregnant!) it is such a beaitiful place and we each had one friend there. So intimate. anyways, a homeless guy walked through it and if you know SF, you know you it's so quintessentially SF and hilarious.

@prettylizy: My parents got married the same way, but with my dad's uncle doing the ceremony.

Nope, I have a big family and wanted everyone there. I loved my wedding though, it wasn't stressy

I really wanted to get married at city hall, then spend the wedding money on a big party a couple months later. But our parents insisted we have a wedding and were married by a minister so our marriage would be "real". I was bummed, but they were paying so they got their way.

We got married at the courthouse before DH went to basic training. We originally planned on having a big ceremony later on but it didn't happen. It makes me sad that I don't have any wedding pictures and that I didn't get to wear my dress. Maybe one day we'll renew our vows and have a ceremony.

@.twist.: @MrsTiz: Bahaha, you guys are hilarious. It could have been me, I did post photos on weddingbee.
I had a big tulle ballgown, long red hair, DH is blond, the girls wore convertible plum dresses and I had lots of twinkle lights involved. Does that sound like the wedding you are thinking of?

We got married in City Hall not for financial reasons but we both felt that a wedding was a waste of money. We really wanted to fly to NYC and elope there because its our favorite city but our parents would have did some major a$$ kicking. The in laws also forced us to have a reception at a seafood restaurant but we kept the guest list really small and refused to let our parents invite any of their friends we didn't know. All in all we are happy we went this route and kept our savings because we got pregnant a month after marriage. All the money we saved, we splurged on the Lo's nursery and to us, it was well worth it.

@Arden: I just remember red hair and a big dress. Did you wear a crown? Not a diamond one, it was flowers??

@Arden: Yep, it was totally you. I just saw your photos in the share your wedding photos thread and I *swooned* again.

@Arden: @.twist.: Yep! Just saw that thread, it's the third picture that I remember. You and your DH sitting down with your red hair and flower. I always thought you looked like a fairy!
