A family member with two children is going through some very difficult financial times. She recently posted on Facebook about this and said that she's going to be applying for food stamps this week. She didn't do this in a dramatic way or anything, but was done to promote a side business that she has in an effort to bring in more income. I was thinking about sending them some gift cards in the mail anonymously. I don't think she would just accept help (hence trying to get more work for her business so she can earn the money), but I don't think she'd throw away/ refuse a gift card for gas, food, etc. Is this a really bad idea? We are in no way well off, but this would not impact our ability to pay bills or save.

Yes, I would absolutely do that. I love helping family when I can, and totally love anonymous donations!

I think it's a really sweet gesture and a nice way to say you care. I think if you know she wouldn't just accept the help then this is a nice way to do it so that she has to accept.

I think that would be an awesome thing to do! You will never how how much of an impact it will make on her day, week or month! It might be the pick me up she desperately needs.

So I don't believe Facebook is the place to share these sort of things, regardless of the situation... But with that said, yes, definitely send something anonymously. Very kind of you! I thought about doing something like this for my brother, but decided to talk to him about it and let him know I was sending something.

I'm glad you all don't think it is creepy or weird to give help in this way.

We have often helped family out in similar situations, not anon. though. I think it's a great idea though if you feel she wouldn't like to accept help otherwise
