We're in NY for my sisters wedding and we've rented someone's brownstone for the trip. They're on vacation too and figured it was a good way to make some extra money, and for us its nice because we have the kitchen, it's a good location, and they have two kids so there are toys everywhere.
I'm not sure that I'd ever want to rent out my place though. Strange people sleeping on your sheets, sitting on your toilet, using your stuff.

I wouldn't rent out my house short term like that. But if we were in a situation where we had to relocate for work but only for a limited time (let's say a year). I would totally get a renter in that situation.

I would be completely stressed wondering what shape it's going to be in when we got back. I'm pretty particular about our stuff, and I'd sure like it all to be here or all in one piece after renters for a weekend!

We rented our apt once over Xmas to my co-worker's parents since he asked. Never again!! They drank our wine and burned my candles. Really??????? They also left a stain of something (maybe food) on our headboard and the step-mom forgot her thong underwear. Awkward. Yeah, never again.

I couldn't do it! It would creep me out knowing there were strangers there, possibly going through my stuff! How could you trust people to not take anything?

Eek, with all our stuff there? No thanks. I'm not sure I'd even be comfortable renting out someone else's house for the weekend, I'd feel too weird about using all their stuff. Totally awkward!

If the Olympics come to our town (currently one of the bids for 2022), we'll move in with our friends for a few weeks and rent out our place. We could basically make enough in a few weeks to completely pay off our mortgage! Otherwise, no we wouldn't rent out our house for any other occasion.

I would consider it for a vacation home-- I've rented a vacation home that the people used a lot, but rented out a bunch of the weeks they didn't use it. So, they had stuff there, but not the personal stuff-- that was locked into a separate closet.
For my regular house, not unless it was an extreme situation like @Honeybee: In that case, seems to be well worth the time and cost of moving your personal stuff into storage for a couple of weeks.

Where I grew up people do this all the time. They rent their homes out during the Masters golf tournament and go on vacation. People pay big bucks for places to stay during the tournament.

@MrsBrewer: If you google "2022 winter olympics US" there are a bunch of news articles from the last couple days that say the US will not put in a bid for 2022 so they can focus on bidding for 2026, instead. 
So I guess we will not be hosting the Olympics any time soon. Lame.
Anyway, we're one of the forerumming areas/regions
(not cities) listed in all the articles. Interestingly enough, we own a condo about an hour away from one of the other cities listed; and my in-laws live only two hours away from another city listed. So we'd be set if the Olympics ended up in any one of those locations!

@Honeybee: Oh wow, well hey in those 4 years, you could pay down your mortgage even more, and then by the time 2022 comes around, you could still rent it out and then have extra money! 
Maybe a really nice vacation!

Nope. Plus, way too many pets. Even though we go out of our way to keep everything clean, it is a turn-off for a lot of people.

If the house was empty, sure. If my house was empty, sure. Never in a million years would I let strangers stay in my house for a week with all of my personal belongings. My clothes, family pictures, TV's? Gah that is so so not okay with me. I would never stay in someone elses house like that either.

I definitely wouldn't be comfortable with this! I've looked into renting someone else's home for vacations just because the prices are usually good but I've never done it because I think I'd feel awkward using all of their things!
