I would try to lend to a friend who I trust to return them! That's what I will be doing with C's clothes since she is having a baby girl six months after. But save any special items.

I would get rid of things that are bulky like jackets but keep things like newborn onesies that don't take up a lot of space but you won't want to buy again.

@autumnlove: this. If we end up having #2, they will be 5+ years apart, and we are getting rid of probably 95% of her clothes. We are closer to one and done though, so we are probably more apt to get rid of things.

I kept most of the clothes under 24 month because she grew so fast and a lot were hardly used. Now she's more active and growing slower so I don't mind selling the clothes except for like one box of special stuff.

Hmm I think I would sell just BC if you waiting years, the clothes may look dated by the time time you have another baby.

The baby clothes LO had from birth to 18 mos take up one Rubbermaid box, so I decided to keep them. Once he hit 2yo, he started to wear clothes out before he outgrew them, so there is more stuff that I end up throwing out because it's just not worth saving after it's been repaired to within an inch of its life! I suspect you'll find you have less to store as your son gets older.

if i were planning on a significant age difference, i would sell most of her stuff and just keep what we absolutely loved.

If I was in your position I would sell most of it. There's no point hanging on to stuff for that long in a small apartment and not to mention the number of moves that can happen in between.

We aren't even sure if we're having another, and yet I can't seem to even consider getting rid of his clothing. And I'm the total opposite of a hoarder. I don't know what it is about his clothes that I just can't let go.

As you know, we're planning similar spacing. We're kepeing some, getting rid of some. Ive kept stuff I really loved, stuff she wore a lot, stuff people made for her, etc. Anything I was "meh" about, anything that wasnt in good shape (faded or stained), basically the throw-aways and the "filler", I got rid of. I have to say it was close to half and half, but I think Ive kept more than Ive gotten rid of. Im keeping less and less as the sizes get bigger though, Ive noticed. Ive kept very few 18m stuff as Ive cleaned it out.

Ive been doing it as she outgrows stuff. I figure a lot of the stuff Im keeping could be resold just as easily in 5 years as it can be now and the others can be make into a baby clothes quilt.

I lived in a small NYC apartment and after #1, we had no plans for #2 for years... I allowed myself to keep baby clothes in two suitcases. I fit a LOT in there!

What I didn't keep, I donated. I didn't think I'd get much return on them. They were in good condition, but I think it's pretty hard to sell used baby clothes. I sold a ton of gear though! Strollers, bouncers, etc...

DD#2 ended up arriving 3 years later and still wears tons of hand-me-downs. It worked out well!

I am in the process of going through my son's clothing...I purged what I could at the time of the closet switchouts (faded, pilled, stained) and it wasn't that much. I'm left with a ton of stuff and I basically went through it a second time.

I purged by brand, so anything that is Carters (except the tiny pajama he came home in) that wasn't stained was put in a bag to donate. I had a fair amount of pajamas and onesies from there, as well as some pants.

As for the rest, I had a tougher time with this. A lot of my son's clothing is Ralph Lauren, Janie and Jack, Osh Kosh and Baby Gap. This is the better stuff and I decided to let my SIL pick through it and what she doesn't want, I will sell. I did pull out a few special things, but not as much as I thought I would want to save when he first grew out of the sizes, if that makes sense.

I am another one in the camp of just keep a small selection. A family I work with kept things and had a large gap between their kids, and it mostly wasn't worth it. They wound up dedicating a ton of space to all of the stuff and they still needed to go out and purchase a lot of new things. Because of the kids being built differently, born in different seasons and the possibility of different genders it didn't make sense to have stored everything.

Save your favorites, winter coats (if they are in great shape), and newborn stuff. Be brutal about getting rid of stuff that has a little staining, stretched necks, worn out elastic, well loved shoes etc.
