I recently got a few stitches on my shoulder so I can't carry and walk DS around like he wants me to when he's being fussy. I know that is the only thing he wants, but unfortunately, I can't give it to him! I'm able to hold him while sitting, but he still cries, so, I'm wondering if it's okay that I let him cry it out in my arms. He is 4 months old. Also, there are times where I have to step away for a bit to tend to something in the kitchen or do the laundry and I want him to be independent for just a few minutes.....can/should I let him fuss it out? Oh, and in the car, I have no choice but to let him cry it out because he doesn't respond to any of my attempts while I'm driving! =P

In the car, yeah, she just has to wait until we stop.
At home, I let her fuss for a few minutes on her own. I don't see any harm in it as long as she's not really upset.

I definitely have let DD cry/fuss if I know she's ok (clean, fed, rested) and I needed to do things. I don't see the harm in it because you do actually need to get stuff done, and it's only a few moments that he's left to cry. (it's not like you're just letting him cry as you're laying on your bed, watching soaps and eating bon bons)
I'll be in your position next week when I go in for knee surgery and I definitely won't be able to carry her around.

I let my LO cry/fuss for short periods of time. She's 4 months so she's not a super young infant anymore. And I figured it's good for the baby to fuss/cry a little as a form of communicating her needs/wants to us. A little is a ok I think.

How old is your LO?
If I am holding my son and he is fussing/crying - I feel there is really nothing else I can do for him and he just has to deal with it. I hope that doesn't sound mean - but you ARE comforting and soothing him even if it's not the way he wants.
In the car, unless he is hysterical, there isn't much I can do either. It will just take longer to get home if I stop multiple times to soothe him... he'll just cry again once I start driving, so I just get home as quickly as possible.

I let her cry/fuss sometimes, especially if I know she's dry & fed. . I think it's ok for her to learn that she can't always have or get everything she wants and that mommy can't always be at her beck and call. Maybe that sounds harsh but it's reality

I've been slowly letting LO cry it out or fuss a little bit because I have to get things done, it's usually only for a couple of minutes to go pee and grab a glass of water, or brush my teeth. She needs to know every little whimper isn't going to make me pick her up. Sounds mean, but hey I have to take care of myself too!

Babies don't understand object permanence until 4-6 months of age, so before LO was 6 months old, if she cried I came right back to her. Now that she's nearly 8 months, I'll let her fuss for a minute if I can tell she's trying to get attention, but if she's really crying, or if I'm not busy trying to get something done really quickly, I go to her.
