So we just found out that the person hosting our family Christmas breakfast tomorrow has a sinus infection and pneumonia but has been on antibiotics for 3 days. Most of the family haven't met our 3 month old yet. Would you go? I tried calling the pediatrician but was too late and they are closed for the holiday

@Meltini: I wouldn't go! Mostly because pneumonia is so scary (it's possible that the relative's pneumonia isn't contagious at this point, but I'd be worried since LO is so young). If LO was a little older though, I'd consider it!

I wouldn't. That's a tough one, but I'd rather skip and know my LO was safe then go and chance LO getting sick. If my LO did get sick, I'd feel awful that I could have prevented it.
Can you have those that aren't sick stop by to meet your LO? Or set up another Christmas celebration day?

@Meltini: idk what I'd do but have you tried your insurance company they normally have a nurse line you can call.

@meltini: oh gosh, that's hard. I know the "right" answer is to not go but what if it would've been fine (like if you got ahold of the doctor/nurse)? I can try calling my ped office for you! I think they have an on-call advice nurse and I can just pretend it's for me...

I'm a Medical Assistant and if the relative has been on antibiotics for 3 solid days then "technically" they should no longer be contagious. If they have any sort of fever then, no I wouldn't go. But if they do not have a fever and have been on medication that long then I would consider it. However, I would not allow them to hold/touch the baby, frequent handwashing and possibly even a disposable mask (like you see in the hospitals). I don't think any of that is asking too much. I know in the clinic we tell parents/patients that 24 hours of antibiotics/no fever they can go back to school/work etc.
It comes down to what you are most comfortable with and your family should be understanding either way. Also, your pediatrician should have an "after hours" number to call and talk to the doctor on call.

I wouldn't go. It sucks but a sick newborn is waaaay worse. It's entirely possible that it would be fine but I'm always extra cautious. It's a very hard decision though.

@Meltini: I just heard back from the nurse and she said it should be absolutely fine to go -- just make sure the person covers their mouth when coughing and washes hands, and she wouldn't recommend having the person holding the baby. If it were me, I would be comfortable going. She reminded me that pneumonia is the *outcome* of a bacterial infection and not something that can be passed on. The bacterial infection, of course, can be passed but would not be contagious at this point.
All that being said, if you don't want to go -- don't! -

So we ended up going and the woman who was sick was very careful which was nice. DH's grandpa was sick and got mad when I wouldn't let him hold the baby. He didn't tell anyone ge was sick so that was a nice surprise.
After our christmas breakfast we got a phone call that another relative at a family gathering has a fever so we will not be attending that one. No clue why the parents have a sick child at a christmas party but at least they called to give us a heads up. It's definitely a sick christmas around here! Thanks for all the advice yesterday from every one. It was a really tough decision to make.
