With our first, we were literally gifted so many things, we hardly bought anything his first year except some NB size sleepers (he was smaller than anticipated) and a few different kinds of bottles.
We did buy a few used onesies, hats, socks, and a carseat bag from a Just Between Friends consignment sale just to see what those sales were like, and they worked out just fine too, so I wouldn' t have turned down hand me downs for basics. Those infant towels get outgrown so fast that hand me downs are fine too. Crib sheets are another good thing to get used, especially if you're going to send your baby to daycare and you have to provide sheets. (We often double bag our mattress with sheets/protector/sheets so if he has a puke or blowout at night, its just a matter of pulling off a layer!)
I would personally buy new bibs, burp cloths (cloth diapers are the best!), and would decline anything with stains or gear that couldn't be washed and sanitized fully.

I would have loved hand me downs, especially baby gear (bouncer swing etc) but we were the first in our family to have a baby and all my friends were having babies at the same time! So we got everything new. My sister is pregnant now and really excited to get hand me downs from me...and I'm really excited to give them to her!

All my LO's clothes are hand me downs with a few new supplements as needed. It saved us a ton of time, money, and it was great. They only wear the same size clothes for such a short time that I didn't want to be shopping for her all the time. She is 16 months now, and whenever someone asks if I want their used kids clothes, I always say yes.

I did not. I was such a snob with my first baby! I'm hoping to be a little more open minded with #2

I generally prefer hand-me-downs or used stuff, especially things that get used for short periods of time like baby clothes. Not only is the price more attractive, but it makes me feel better about the environmental/consumer impact. And we've only gotten a few hand-me-downs that we didn't end up using because I really didn't like them or they weren't something we used (like gowns, we just never really liked gowns). And we'll pass it all along as our son outgrows things!

I'm cheap, so I would be all over hand-me-downs if anyone wanted to give me any! I'm pretty much the first of my friends to get pregnant, though, so seems doubtful...

I got tons of hand-me-downs and i really appreciated it. I only realized how much i had to spend on clothes when i got to the sizes where there were no hand-me-downs. Yikes!
I obviously had a lot of new gear as well, but i welcomed the hand-me-downs.

We received a mix of both new and hand-me-downs with my first and I'll admit I was a bit stuck up about the used stuff at first, but then I LOVED them once I realized that A) babies grow even faster than I was expecting and B) I didn't have to freak out as much when the used clothes got stains on them.
With this second pregnancy I'm at 33 weeks and have only bought three clothing items knowing we'd be receiving a TON of hand-me-downs. Now that we have the used stuff I know where to supplement and buy.

I have loved all the hand-me-downs we have received. But I do find that when I pick out something for her to wear, I gravitate more often to the new stuff her grandmas buy for her. So, both?

I bought a few gently used onesies along with a few brand new cute newborn stuff...and then a friend gifted me a box of gorgeous nb boy clothes that her LOs grew out of too fast! I kept getting told that newborn clothes were unnecessary (which didn't end up being true)! So I was glad I had a lot, but also glad I didn't buy much new. After he got into the 000 & beyond I didn't get any hand-me-downs so I was pretty selective and just got nice outfits that we are keeping for next time. I was so grateful for the nb hand me downs!

My daughter is just over a year behind @littlejoy s DD so I get their hand me downs to borrow & return. My Mom bought my sister several pairs of HA jams for my nephews- I get those and lots of boy/gender neutral clothes- most I keep in case we have a boy next time. I also have a friend who has 2 girls that gives me a bag each size- they are more in play condition but I'm happy to get them.
Lots of loaned/given gear which I love. My sister gave us a car seat, travel stroller, pack & play. My cousin gave me a swing. LJ loaned me a jumper. It's awesome.
I also buy consignment.
