Are your parents friends with your in-laws? Do they keep in contact or make plans independent of you and DH/SO?
Our parents live hours away and they just see each other when we arrange something. They did call each other when LO arrived to congratulate each other on becoming grandparents!

My mom actually knew my MIL before I met my husband. They were in a Jewish woman's group together. They weren't good friends though, and hadn't seen each other in years. But they are very friendly together- the first time we got them together just sat there and gossiped together for hours. They only see each other when we all go out together, and they did call and congratulate each other when we told them I was pregnant. I think they just really wanted to talk to someone about it and they weren't allowed to tell other people yet, so they loved talking about it to each other.

Our parents only know each other through us but they do know some mutual acquaintances since we live in a smaller community. The only times they really ever get together are for things involving us like weddings, showers, etc. or when we have them all over for dinner. They get along great though and help each other when needed. My dad went to my in-laws house at 3am last 4th of July when it was flooding because he has the equipment needed for that kind of thing. When my dad was in the hospital last week my in-laws came to visit and brought meals. It will be interesting to see how things develop once our baby arrives this summer.

Our parents have only met once for dinner when we introduced them, and at our rehearsal dinner and wedding. Our Moms also met at my wedding shower, and will again at my baby shower. Other than us, our parents really have nothing in common, they are really different, and are in completely different stages of life, so I can't ever see them getting together unless it is something me and DH plan.

Like @MsMini: our parents are VERY different and have only been around each other when it related to DH and me (wedding planning/showers/etc). I don't foresee them ever just "hanging out."

DH and I are from the same small town, so they "knew of" each other before we started dating in high school. They were friendly to each other...and then it got awkward. My mom found out we had sex at 17 (DH is my one and only) and FLIPPED out. She immediately called DH's mom and said "My daughter was a virgin when she met your son and now she's not and will never be again." Ouch.
That was nearly 6 years ago and things have slowly gotten better. We broke up in college for a year, so my mom wasn't a fan of him/his family for awhile there. When we got engaged, both families tried harder to get along. By the time our wedding came around, everything was fine and since then, its gotten even better.

DH's mom sends my parents a Christmas card each year. ...and my mom always says she's going to send one back, but she usually doesn't get around to it. Lol. That's about the extent of their interaction.

They'll call each other on holidays to wish each other well but that's about it.

Nah - getting them together is difficult because they live in different states and they are completely different people. My mom and MIL are trying to work together right now to plan my baby shower and that's proved to be almost too much for both of them. Blah,

They live several hours away, so they don't see each other. When we move back to my parents' town, I imagine we will all get together for dinner or something when they come visit. They are very cordial but they don't have much in common. They do exchange Christmas cards, but I don't consider that "keeping in touch."

My mom lives in CA, in-laws in Sweden. They've only met once and so far have only sent each other Christmas cards. But my mom's close to my ex-mil. She's even met DH and crocheted us a baby blanket! As much as I still love her, I've been avoiding her to avoid any complications.

My parents live in Arizona, and my in-laws live in Washington state. We've all had dinner three times during various visits over the years, and of course they were around each other at our wedding, and they exchange Christmas cards. That's about it. Our parents are all wonderful but they're really different, and I don't really think they'd hang out independently if they lived in the same town.

Definitely not. My mom is not a fan of either of my MILs, with good reason. They are very hard to get along with and have done/said some things to me and her that makes my mom dislike them.

I wish my parents and inlaws lived closer, they'd totally hang out without us. They're surprisingly similar, but that doesn't really surprise me because they're all European. There's a language barrier, but they make it work. They email and speak on the phone or via skype once in a while.
They've only met a few times because they live on different continents.

Our parents enjoy going to dinner with us, but I don't beleive they have went without us. They do get along and have very similar personalities. My dad and FIL plan on going hunting together this fall which is fun for them, something they have in common.

my parents and in laws get along fairly well. we have dinners together a few times a year and have even traveled to hawaii once together. i'm so glad they get along!

Nope! They do inquire of each other when we visit either side of the family.
