My mom brought this book for my 16mo on Monday. I hate the book -- it calls sand, hot sauce and coffee yucky, and it introduces the terms "booger" and ear wax, wth? -- and my son brings me books to read all the time so I chucked it behind a bunch of other stuff on a high shelf.
But she's coming back tomorrow -- my parents watch my son two afternoons per week -- and she was really excited about the stupid book so I am pretty confident she will notice its absence.
What should I do?

Ha we have this book and my LO LOVES it--finds it hysterical. I guess I don't see what is so bad about it?
I would probably wait and if she asks where the book is, I would pull it out and say "Oh it must have fallen back here" but not offer it until she asks.

My son loves this book as well and it actually helped him vocalize some things about his picky eating. I'm not sure what's so bad about it either.
That being said, I would just wait to see if she asks about it and then pull it out.

What's wrong with booger and earwax? You have a boy and he's going to talk about much grosser things than that before long! I'd just keep it handy so you can pull it out if she wants to read it with him. But if you don't even want her to read it with him, you'll have to tell her that you aren't ok with the book.

Introduce Grandma to children's lit you like and gently explain that you don't care for that book. Childhood is short and there are plenty of great books to choose from.

I don't see what's wrong the book? If your LO likes it, I'd read it to him. Plus boys like those kind of things - even at a young age!

We don't have that one, but I do like Leslie Patricelli books in general. Sometimes if books have words I don't care for I just skip that part or change the word to something else. I would just avoid reading it to your LO and leave it out for Grandma to read when she comes over. Coffee, hot sauce, and sand are yucky for babies to put in their mouths....

we loved that book. it was a really useful tool in teaching between yummy and yucky, and in general leslie patricelli's books have been big hits.
i would just be honest though!

If you honestly aren't ready for booger talk, just tell your mom that you don't like some of the words it introduces so you're saving it for later once he's already learned them from somewhere else (or perhaps when you're trying to cure a nose-picking habit).

If my mom bought a book I couldn't stand I would be honest. That wouldn't work with my MIL for a variety of reasons. She did buy DS one book I really hated (all about being naughty and getting into trouble and it was just very strange) and I don't put it out. She asked once and I was like, "Oh, it's somewhere in our room because we were reading in there. I don't feel like digging it out right now." Of course, that won't work if your mom would go looking for it - my mom and MIL know I'm not really comfortable with them in our room when we're not home.

I would leave it out for Grandma and put it away when Grandma leaves. Those are words they're going to learn because they are things in the body so they wouldn't offend me like some other words I have come across.

@MaryM: I love this advice. Though I too joint the "not sure what the problem is" camp. This one actually helped my daughter stop putting crayons in her mouth all the time.

If I disagree with something in a book, which is what I am assuming the problem is, I'll just explain it to DD. Like if it says broccoli ice icream is yucky or something, I just tell her I think it could be good. Is that the gist of the situation? I haven't read that book but there is a video she's seen like that...

We bought the Yes/No book in the same series and had to hide it right away because LO thought it was hysterical to do the "no" things, especially sticking his finger up his nose!
We'll just bring it out when he's older.
