I'm freaking out. I know it may be early to see the yolk sac but I can't help feeling hopeless. Anyone have this happen to them? I'm still waiting on bloodwork to come in so I'll hopefully know more.

This happened with my 2nd pregnancy, everything turned out fine when I had a scan a week later. I hope that is your case as well!

At almost 6 weeks with DD we only saw gestational sack and fetal pole I belive!
She is a happy 19 month old!

@lilyann: I'm hoping so. My gestational sac measured 7.42mm so could be too small. After going through IF, you just don't stop worrying.
@Faithfertility: That's reassuring to hear, I was completely taken back.

@LoveHope: Many prayers I understand all your fears DD took almost 3 yrs and not a fun IF road!

@LoveHope: Mine was the same. I went in at what we thought was 6 weeks, but was actually 5w4d. Just a gestation sack, nothing else, I was freaked out! My OB scheduled an appointment for a week later to 'see what happens'. That was rough. I'm 18 weeks now, everything progressed fine.
That's the only crappy part about early scans, I'm not sure if they're worth it. I found myself more stressed out than relieved in the first 12-ish weeks.

@WinterBee: They really are stressful. They want me back in Thursday. I'm really hoping it was just too early.

5w2d is really early. I think it's entirely possible everything is fine. Hoping for the best for you.

5w2d is SO early! I had a scan at 5w6d and all we could see were gestational sacs. I was worried because there was no mention of a fetal pole but my twins were fine! Fingers crossed for a successful second US!

@LoveHope: That's super early! I don't have any docs that will even do a scan that early exactly for this reason...it's iffy if you'll see anything and it can cause undue worry. (for various reasons I've been through 3 OB's plus an RE in 3 pregnancies and none of them would see me before 7-8 weeks).
It's way too early to be freaking out I can't guarantee it will be ok, but knowing everything I know, I wouldn't be worried about it that early in the pregnancy.
Good luck and looking forward to a positive update from you!
ETA: forgot to mention that after my IVF pregnancy, the office accidentally scheduled me for an ultrasound around 6 weeks. They calculated the date wrong for when I'd be 7 weeks. My RE was visibly pissed at the front desk for doing t that early and he warned me several times we likely wouldn't see much. And he was right. BUT that pregnancy stuck and my son is now 22 months old!

With my pregnancy with DS2, they ordered a scan at 5 1/2 weeks and only saw a sack. At my next scan (7 1/2 weeks) there was a baby. It is still really early! Hang in there!

I'm really surprised the RE scheduled a scan that early! Both RE's I've been to wouldn't schedule me before 6w 5d.
5w 2d is so early, I was told we may not even see the heartbeat until just after 7 weeks.

That is so early! In my current pregnancy at 7w all the doc saw was a gestational sac. I thought for sure I was doomed and was a depressed mess for two weeks waiting for the follow up scan. Two weeks later, there was baby measuring right on target at 9w. It's great for you that they saw the gestational sac and I don't think they would except to see much more around 5w. Good luck to you, I hope you have a great update for us in a week or so. Definitely don't freak out.

@PawPrints: Seriously, why do they even do this???!!! It's heart wrenching.
@trailmix: RE didn't even say anything regarding a fetal pole. Why torture someone like this and not have me just go in at 6 weeks! I'm sure they have their reasons, but ughhhh!
Thanks for the reassurance ladies.

@LoveHope: I'm thinking good thoughts for you! I have an ultrasound this Friday and I'm glad to read these stories before hand. My doctor made it sound like a heartbeat was a sure thing at 6 weeks but the more I read and chat with people the more I know that it's not a guarantee.

@Cole: Thank goodness for these ladies on HB. They certainly make me feel like I'm not losing my mind. Lots of luck with your ultrasound Friday!

@LoveHope: what kind of ultrasound was it? Was it a transvaginal one? I've never had an ultrasound that early, my earliest was at 7 weeks so the fact that yours was so early is probably why it was hard to see anything
kiwi / 689 posts
@Mrsbells: Yes it was transvaginal. It's part of their protocol to have an ultrasound early on.

I had an u/s this morning and they saw the yolk sac! I just don't understand why they had me come in so early and cause me to worry.

@lilyann: I was so relieved too. Of course googling didn't help me either. I go back in next week so hopefully we'll hear a heartbeat

@LoveHope: Yay! Glad to hear things are looking good! I had a loss detected at the first u/s so I know the torture of coming in and having to wait and then come back in. Glad your story is a happy one!

@LoveHope: yeah i dont understand their logic either aside from the fact that they get to bill your insurance for it
