I need more pants for DS - the 5T's I have for him fall off his waist and the 4T's are high waters! So I need slim 5t's
Kickers is they must be "soft" so like t-shirt material/sweat pants - all cotton
Any ideas???

Thats tough. I know there are a lot of jeans that have the adjustable waist bands but those aren't soft.
Have you maybe tried looking in the girl section for just some black pants? I wonder if girls cuts aren't a bit better (long and slim versus a boys wide cut)>

I just fold the waist down, which helps make them a bit slimmer. Cherokee also has the kind with the inner elastic you can pull tighter.

If you have any soft ones with belt loops you could try these - my SIL swore by them.

I was going to suggest looking at girls leggings too, they tend to be long and slim.

Hmm, I'll be on the look out. DS is in between 4-5 right now too. Gap doesn't work since they are so big in the waist but Oshkosh seems to have smaller waist bands.

@Mamaof2: do you sew? Simple sweats are super easy, then you can customize the waist/length.

Ellie is the same on all counts. Land's End has smaller waists, and has some cargo pants with an elasticized waist (like sweats) that she really prefers. She would not wear jeans at all until this year. Gymboree also was smaller-waisted.

@scg00387: haha I try! I made some pj bottoms for DS and they were quite wonky! Maybe I need a pattern??

@Mamaof2: I'll look online for a pattern I think would be easy and post back!

@Mamaof2: Is this what you were picturing? http://www.peekaboopatternshop.com/product/lullaby-line-pants-shorts
PDF patterns have an extra step of printing and taping together the pattern, but I think the directions are a lot more helpful (with better pictures) than traditional paper patterns. That one is the only one I can find so far; you could make the biggest size in the waist, and then add on however many inches you wanted on the bottom!

@Mamaof2: It would be an easy pattern to reuse old tshirts or Goodwill shirts - if you cut the pattern with the bottom at the hem of the shirt, it saves you from hemming them Sewing with knit fabric (like tshirts) instead of woven fabric (like a man's dress shirt) is a little different, it helps to use a ballpoint needle. Let me know if you try it or if I can help at all! Once you "get it" it's a very simple pattern.
Otherwise let me know and I could ask around on my PDF group for folks who might be interested in selling you some custom pants!

@scg00387: Thanks for the tips!
Like I said I am new and have only sewed with cottons or flannel - I have heard that knits are tricky but I know that is what DS would like best so I need to try!!
Oh didn't know a different needle would help..... can I buy those at Joanne's? Everything I have sewn so far is with the needle that came with my machine ...

@Mamaof2: I really don't think knits are tricky! I find them much more forgiving than wovens. This is a good resource: http://prudentbaby.com/2011/09/by-craft/how-to-sew-knit-fabrics-sewing-with-jersey-101-2/
You can buy ballpoint needles at Joanns! That's truly the only thing I think you "need" - that and to use a stretch stitch (often looks like a lightning bolt). Like I said, I love love love upcycling so then you don't need to hem. But, with t-shirt type material, it doesn't fray so.. if you don't want to hem, in general, you don't have to and it will often roll up in the wash and look intentional, or you could cuff to give yourself more growing room

Ugh, my daughter is like this. Entire brands of pants (H&M, especially), don't fit her because they're way too wide when they fit her by length. Target brand works, often. She wears stretchy leggings and jeggings only. Structured pants just would not fit her.
