@DesertDreams88: On accident drives me crazy! Of course so does on line (I just hear the dialup tone when people say that).

It’s totally cracking me up how passionate both sides are! I completely understand that there is more than one way of doing a split so I can understand saying the splits as in I can do more than one way of splits. And I don’t think it’s weird at all to say I can do splits. Plural. But it is definitely seeming like a regional thing that someone would say she did a split versus she did the splits.

The splits (grew up in Chicago and Virginia). I've never heard it used in the singular form.

Chicago - The splits.
I mean, you don't say you're wearing pant. You wear pants. That's just as odd if you think about it.

@Mommy Finger: I’m currently taking French classes, and in French “pants” is a singular word, and I’m having a very hard time with it.

@Mommy Finger: but you don’t say THE pants. I am wearing THE pants. I am doing THE splits.

@travellingbee: we could say that we're putting on the pants, but I don't think whether or not we say the or a before a word is the issue here. Just pointing out that just because a word ends in s, it doesn't automatically make it plural. And I'm honestly not trying to argue or be difficult. The English language has so many random side rules. No wonder others find it hard to learn!

@Mommy Finger: actually putting THE before it is exactly what sounds weird to those of us who don’t. It wouldn’t sound weird at all to me to say she was doing splits.
