Alright, let's try yet another girl name thread...

@T.H.O.U.: I know people named Sophia and Sophie and none of them use nicknames other than maybe Soph. Same with Sylvia/Sylvie (Sylv). I mean, I don't care what the OP does and I think both names are lovely. My thought was that they are just separate but similar names....like Isabelle/Isabella.

@lamariniere: I know that is true in France and probably other European countries but since we are clearly not French, I guess I don't really care. It's a solidly American thing to do (I go by my nickname almost exclusively - no one has called me my given name since I was 10 or 11 when I insisted that they stop haha, I really don't like my first name sad to say) and I'm not concerned about it. I guess I don't know why it matters? Even if no one does that? I think of William and Liam as being separate and distinct names, too, but no one seems to think it's weird that the majority of boys being named William here these days are only called Liam. (I know two of these here in my small town and a few on HB!) I just don't think it will be an issue, separate names or what. We can call her what we want and DH can put what he wants on the birth certificate and no one will be the wiser.

@T.H.O.U.: Yes, I know a girl who is called Sophie by her dad (you know you're around young kids too often when you type "dada" and have to fix it!!) and her official name is Sophia. Honestly this is just such a small issue I am not letting it concern me. I'm just glad that she's been given a name at all.

@coopsmama: My formal name and NN can be 2 separate names but like your DH, my Dad wanted the formal name on the birth certificate but agreed to go by the NN my mom wanted

Love Sylvia! It was my grandma's name and DD's middle name

@coopsmama: of course you can call her what you want! I already stated that I think it's a nice name. I was just expressing that I had never heard of the two names being used together with one as a nickname. I honestly never knew Liam was a nn for William until HB either.

@lamariniere: oh no, I know you weren't saying that we shouldn't - I was just pondering if there were a deeper reason we shouldn't for DD's sake down the road (as she grows) and I guess I can't think of a reason why it will be an issue for her since so many do that already. She can choose to go by what she wants as she ages and if she prefers one or the other that will be fine.

@coopsmama: I probably would have said the same thing a few years ago about the Liam/William thing. Just a combo I had never heard of!
