Has anyone been told the wrong gender at an anatomy scan? I have always had blood work done to confirm gender so I have never found out gender at ultrasound... Just curious.. I would think this would be super rare.

No, both of my 18 week anatomy scans were correct.

Both of my scans were correct! But I've seen other people post about it on facebook.

A friend of a friend was told via bloodwork that the baby was a boy. She just had her 20 week ultrasound and they had multiple techs come in to confirm because ultrasound shows girl!!! Baby hasn't been born yet for confirmation one way or the other.

My friend had an elective scan at 16 weeks and was told boy. She had her anatomy scan 2 weeks later and her OB said it was definitely a girl. She now has a 3 year old daughter.

Mine was correct, but my office mate was told girl (multiple scans too) and it was a boy! However.. it was 10 years ago. They had 2 girls already so it was a happy surprise.

@Anya: My MIL was convinced she was having girls but I think she was just crazy and the US showed boy.

I know two people this has happened to. For one person, it was 15 years ago, so I'm guessing things weren't as accurate as they are now. For the other person, she didn't find out until the day her baby was born!

@BandDmommy: When we found out boy from our blood work my OB told me it's basically impossible for blood work to show boy and be incorrect because the mom obviously doesn't have a Y chromosome. She told me that if it turned out to be wrong, it would mean the lab mixed up my results with someone else!

@Truth Bombs: same scenario! Friend of a friend had a dna test that said boy! Scan said girl! Baby due in January!

@Truth Bombs: you would think they would double check. That's so crazy

My husband's cousin's wife was told girl at her anatomy scan, but was in a car accident a few weeks later. They did an ultrasound to check on the baby and found out it was a boy! He's 2.5 now.

@mrsjyw: @Truth Bombs: When I was pregnant I got the MaterniT21 test done and I remember being really surprised when they told me that it wasn't 100%. I was told boy, so I was really confused as to how that was even possible (due to my not having any Y chromosomes). I asked my friend's wife, because she's a genetic counselor. She gave me a scientific explanation that I don't really remember. It had to do with fetal DNA and where it comes from and where the sample was from. So it is technically possible, but she said if it did happen, it's so rare (and possibly mostly theoretical now?) you'd be a case in a textbook.

I attended a c section where the mom was expecting a girl and had another little boy.

@ShootingStar: Ha! My OB also told me I would be a case in a textbook if it was wrong!

@Ash: How did that go? Wow
@BandDmommy: I have never met anyone IRL that this happened to. Only second hand stories

@Reese: it was crazy. She already had a couple boys so she got all new girl things and got rid of her boy stuff. We were ALL shocked.

@Littlebit: Yup. It was technically a 17 week elective scan, so I don't know if I qualify for this question since my official anatomy scan said boy at 20 weeks. @Lilyann had it happen too. LO is definitely a boy - they think my bladder was overfull and potentially the cord was blocking his boy parts. Who knows.
As an aside, this is my first ever HelloBee shout out. I might have been a little too thrilled.

Well my mom had only 1 u/s with me at 20 weeks (but this was 30 years ago so obviously technology was not as good as today!!) and she was told I was definitely a boy. Came out a girl. Surpriiiise! lol

@BandDmommy: hahaha I was on my computer or I would have emoticon-ed it up!

I had a 17 week scan and they were correct in predicting girl. However, my husband's good friend had an ultrasound that predicted girl and when she gave birth, it was a boy! But this was 9 years ago so maybe technology wasn't as good as today. It still made me worried though. I thought this stuff only happened in movies.

@BandDmommy: My sister in law was told she was having a girl at her 20 week anatomy scan. She had another scan at 24 weeks and found out it was a boy. That's what makes me worry about potentially paying to get an elective ultrasound early to find out the sex...

My scans were right but I know a woman that was told girl and found out this summer at 37 weeks she was having a boy.

This happened to a friend of mine. She was told girl at her anatomy scan and at 38 weeks had a scan to check on something with baby. The tech said "your little boy looks like he's head down, ready for labor" and they were like WHAT?!?!
He was born a couple weeks later.

My friend's bloodwork was wrong -- said boy but when she had her anatomy scan later it was actually a girl! They said it was because she had twins but lost one early on, and the lost one must have been a boy. We were all shocked after the scan when she told us it was a girl, so I can't imagine how she and her husband felt, haha.

Not me, but my sister's friend was told girl all along. She had a boy last month. They had to do some tests to confirm though...he had some condition where it wasn't obvious.

@LBee: You remembered!
I had an elective scan at 16 weeks it said girl...went to anatomy scan 3 weeks later, definitely a boy!

i was told the materniT21 test is only accurate 100% for telling the sex of the fetus with the first pregnancy OR for subsequent pregnancies if you've never had a boy... basically, if you've been pregnant with a boy before, there could be a random Y chromosome floating around, causing them to read the results wrong. but who knows if that's ever happened or is just "possible".

@lioneyes: Interesting. In the case I mentioned above, the woman has already had a boy.

The sonogram tech from the NT said this happened to her on third baby. She had two girls already and was team green with the third. She fell during her the third trimester and had a sonogram. The tech slipped up and told her she was having a boy. At delivery out popped another girl.

you are scaring me with your wrong elective scans! My elective said girl (I saw the three lines clearly multiple times) and the place hasn't been wrong in 10 years, but I guess it happens. I'm ummm already swimming in girl gear from grandma so if this is wrong I'll be crushed!
