I like to go the "traditional" route.
Year 1 for paper I DIYed something. Printed out our personal wedding vows then cut out our initials and framed it in a floating frame.
Year 2 for cotton I got him a hammock with a wood stand for our backyard.
Year 3 (this year) for leather I'm thinking of getting a leather "adventure" book off Etsy like the one in the movie Up.

Like @regberadaisy:, we've been following the traditional route. It's fun, and helps provide guidance on what to get.
Year 1 (paper): Card that resembled where we went on our honeymoon and something else that I can't recall (he didn't get me anything nor acknowledge the anniversary so I'm a bit bitter about it).
Year 2 (cotton): He needed new socks so I got a ton of socks and put a paper heart on the sock with a reason why he "rocks my socks off".
Year 3 (leather): This is us this year. Hubby needs a new wallet so I'm planning on getting him a new leather wallet with a picture of me and DS in it. DS will be 1 month by then!

We usually try to get/do things according to our hobbies. This year, I had the breaks/inner tubes replaced on his road bike. Last year I had tubeless tires put on his mountain bike, and we went to Land Between the Lakes for a bike race (him) and trail running (me). I'm not sure what he's doing for me this year, but last year he bought me a beautiful anniversary band. He also gets me lots of sewing/quilting things like pattern books.

We followed the traditional route too, but have done "joint" presents.
Year 1 (paper) = plane tickets to Seattle for a weekend getaway.
Year 2 (cotton) = picnic blanket from our alma mater embroidered with our last name + picnic basket and supplies, and a picnic that weekend of course.
I'm still trying to figure out year 3 (leather)... @regberadaisy: I love the idea of the Adventure Book from Up!

We have our first in July and we are going the traditional route. Dh is big into hockey, and we just bought a new house. I found on etsy 2 different retro hockey gear prints to hang down in the basement. One is a pair of old bauer hockey skates, and the other is an old hockey stick and puck. He is going to love them. He showed me some similar in a store months ago. He has bought me something with paper... we will see in 3 weeks...

We are weird & don't do a lot of presents. Most of the time we just do cards. This year we got iPhones though!

Nothing fancy, I just make us a photo book of our favorite moments from the last year hopefully next year our budget will allow me to get him something he really wants lol!
