I think the reason hellobee feels Asian is because a lot of the top posters (and a lot of the bloggers) are Asian.

@Arden: i agree.
also a number of the bloggers are friends in real life! we do get a disproportionate number of applications from asian bloggers probably because i'm asian. but over time the demographics change (they did on weddingbee) as the site grows, which is what i'd love! the more diverse the better!
also this is completely unscientific, but i think asian people love to blog! seriously all my asian friends blog!

@Mrs. Bee: I love the diversity here as well
I am sure though, like you and some other pp's said, that part of it is because of your family's heritage. It might encourage more Asians or even more diversity. I think you guys do a great job encouraging a community of individuals who couldn't be more different

yep, another korean here! i love being on hellobee and it's fun seeing the diversity here!
growing up, i wasn't too happy being a minority and it took a lot of understanding and soul-searching to be happy and comfortable in my own skin. it's exciting to be at a place that is diverse and perhaps more diverse than other sites!

@Mrs. Cowgirl: for real?!?! I have major ethnicity envy. I hate being caucasian and would love to be something "interesting" or have a heritage to embrace and be proud of.

@Coco Bee: sadly, yes. growing up in the 80s when it wasn't as diverse was not so fun. i was teased frequently or was the "token" asian kid. up until 3rd grade i was the only asian girl in my grade and i hated being different! but, over time, as the population became more diverse and i as i learned how to appreciate my background, i've come to love my family's story.
yes, there are still dummies who make fun here and there, and yes, i do wish there were more positive asian role models in the media (especially in movies and tv), but overall, we've come a long way!

@Mrs. Cowgirl: for real?! how can people be so cruel. I love diversity and think it's the beauty of America - the most diverse country - but I hate how there are still butt-terds out there who think they're better than everyone else because of their skin color.

For awhile on weddingbee, it seemed like every other Bee blogger selected was Asian... Since a lot of us migrated over here from there, maybe that is partially why?
I love it- I think Asian babies are the cutest things I've ever seen. I mean, Charlie and Olive? Cutest Babies Ever. Can't get enough of their sweet faces.:)

@Pink Champagne: I remember a thread on the WB boards that asked about why all the bloggers were asian. I think Mrs. Bee posted and said out of the X number of bloggers, only about 30-40% were asian. I think many of the early bloggers were asian but later on, there was a ton of diversity.

I"m Korean too. But i agree, I think it just seems like there are a lot of Koreans because a lot of the top posters are Korean, including Mrs. Bee!
BTW, how totally weirdly cool is it that Gangnam Style is playing over American radio? It trips me out everytime I hear Ryan Seacrest announce the Gangnam Style song on KIIS FM. lol

@banana: yeah, the first time I heard it on mainstream radio I was like, whaaaaaa??? So awesome how he blew up so big!

I loved when Psy was on Ellen. He was like "What a minute... I want to introduce myself. I'm Psy... from Korea!"

Blonde haired, blue eyed, white girl here! Married to a fair haired, blue eyed white guy. Both of our family trees are just English back to 1600s, as far as we can trace!
I grew up in an area of our city that was mostly Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi families - there were only 5 white kids our primary class. I learned all about their religions, cultures, foods just as naturally as I learned about my own and celebrated their festivals at school alongside Christmas and Easter. I was in the Indian dance group and have pictures of me, aged 7, in Indian clothes and a bindi dancing at a festival! Our school so embraced diversity, we had a full Chinese dragon (costume? is it a costume? puppet??) and every year, when we did the nativity play, the Chinese dragon would weave around the room to celebrate the birth of Jesus!! It was amazing, actually - I guess diversity is all I've ever known. I really wanted to be Indian, growing up .... When my mum gave me the old net curtain when she bought a new one I didn't pretend it was a veil, as many little girls do, I pretended it was a sari! I still toast and grind my own spices and make lots of Indian foods from scratch.... DH hates my English cooking but he loves my Indian food!
But.... how weird is this..... I don't know any Chinese or Japanese people and I've never even met a Korean IRL! There just isn't an Asian community where I live.
PS - Gangnam Style is massive in the UK too! We love Psy!

NJ Korean here! Married to a NJ Italian - I think I am literally the only Korean in my town!

I'm white! I wanted to make a thread like this but couldn't figure out how to in an un-offensive way. I think most of the bloggers and top posters are Korean which is why it feels like that. Especially when there are threads and everyone posts a picture of their LO's, then i'm like "woah!"
What is this about not showering for 30 days PP?!

@Cherrybee: That is so cute! I used to love watching indian soaps on tv and was mesmorized with the beautiful dresses they would wear.
@sunny: I'm a CBC too! Well...kinda! I was born in HK but grew up in Canada!

I am so white it's not even funny. I like to think that DH gives me some "exotic flair" though. He's Ecuadorian.

@Mrs. Cowgirl: I'm so afraid of this for M! We live in Upstate and there are lots of Asians around because of the local state university. Although there are local Asian residents not enough where there will be more than 1 or 2 in each class. I want her to embrace her diversity and not feel left out because she's not blond hair blue eyes.

I'm Korean American. I think it's interesting that folks are picking up on the big Asian presence. I talk a lot about race/diversity for a living, so I wonder if this opens up some folks eyes on what it feels like not to be part of a majority group. Both the benefits (learning new things) but also the disadvantages (feeling left out or not understanding certain words/cultural nuances). I think so often unless you've been part of a minority group, it can be eye opening to understand that in America at least most Asians are always the minority within the minority. Often we are relegated from mainstream society as "off white" as the conversations concerning race seem to be always focused on the Black, White, and Brown paradigm. Asians always seem to not have an authentic voice, and maybe that's why we are big on blogging as a space to be heard.
So I've very much enjoyed being able to hear from other bees especially those that are Asian as you can see we are all so different and unique, but we also share common cultural bonds and traditions. In the end, regardless of our differences, we essentially are all the same and want the same for ourselves and our families.
