@stiletto_mom: do you talk to her on the phone? Or see her for a weekly lunch or something? I'd treat it like any other news you'd tell her in a matter of fact way - that you're buying a new house, taking a vacation, got a promotion, etc. Straightforward and to the point. Since you know what to expect about her reaction, it sounds like you won't be disappointed. I probably wouldn't tell her at, like, 8 weeks or something, but would wait til later, as long as someone else won't find out and spill the beans to her.

Though grand babies are a different thing, and are certainly celebrated (though maybe less publicly so) in every Asian country I've lived in or visited....perhaps she'll surprise you.

I'm sure she had already guessed by the time we announced because my Asian mother had already called me out on getting fat!

We just took the family out for dinner conveniently on the pretext of Mother's Day.

@stiletto_mom: @regberadaisy: I'm Spanish so culturally we're more emotive. I told my family without fanfare three times. I wouldn't say any of our announcements were particularly romantic or meaningful. No pink balloons or blue cupcakes.... just "we're having a baby."

Neither my husband or I are Asian, but we just told each set of parents. I think you're over-thinking this. You don't have to make an announcement - just tell her she's going to be a grandma. What you get in return in sure will depend on her personality, but you don't have to make it a "thing" - just tell her you're pregnant

I just told my mom over the phone. And I didn't really announce it either, I just kind of slipped it into the conversation. I was talking to her about "hang san" a few weeks ago, and I was just like.. so.. it's not like when cousin was pregnant and couldn't go to the cemetery for grandpa's burial? And it took her a second then she started going nuts. So I kind of wish I'd waited to tell them in person, but I didn't have time since we were supposed to go the next day when I found out. But it's been like a month, and we haven't talked about it since at all! My husband says we Asians have a such a odd dynamic, and it's so true lol.

@stiletto_mom: maybe something for Mother's Day?

@stiletto_mom: from a practical stand point, we had my mom and dad each unwrap gifts which were baby items. My dad got baby oatmeal (he likes oatmeal but was confused why this was baby oatmeal) and my mom got a bottle scrub brush and some baby lotion. It wasn't until they had opened and realized the "baby theme" that we told them we were pregnant.

Just told them in person and showed them the ultrasound.

We live far apart, so it was a phone call.
