When you scheduled your very first OB appointment- Did they send you information about pregnancy or diet? Or maybe chatted with you on the phone?

they mailed me a big packet of stuff and the nurse called me to talk for about 45 minutes.

Nope and even during the appointment is was pretty quick. They gave me a packet of info. I liked it that way, personally.

I guess I was just a little surprised that my doctor's office didn't say anything... My first appointment is at 7 weeks and I've been reading how much development takes place in those 7 weeks and how much the embryo could benefit from super nutrient dense foods.

@psw27: What kind of stuff did they tell you? Anything surprising?

My first office didn't say anything even at the first appointment. They made me sit there for a long time and answer questions while they typed into a computer. When I switched towards the end of my first tri, the new OB finally sat down and talked to me.

At my office they have you come in before you have your first appointment with the OB- to meet with a nurse. The nurse gives you tons of info and packets and asks questions and answers questions.

Nope! I don't think they ever did actually. Other then the questions I asked them.
I think in this day and age they expect most people to know or look it up online.

@HolisticMama: Maybe it's kind of pointless for them to lecture you about eating, since that's about the time when eating becomes tough and the best thing to eat is whatever you can get down. The only thing you really need to have is your prenatals!

I met with the nurse first and she went over all that, and then my first appointment was around 9 weeks with the OB.

I had my first appointment at around 7 weeks and they gave me a big packet of information that included nutrition related stuff.

@HolisticMama: nothing I was too surprised about based on my time here on hellobee! They spoke to me about taking vitamins and when to call them if I was too morning sick or bleeding at all. They told me how to reach them after hours and talked about diet (foods to avoid mostly). It also gave me a chance to ask them questions - which I didn't really have any at that point I just wanted a sticky baby and to see that first u/s!

@HolisticMama: my doctor just told me the basics of what I should avoid, basically raw eggs, liver, blue or mould rippened cheese. To be honest that pretty much covers the extent of what you can't eat in England. Also, as far as nutrition goes, the baby is like a tiny little parasite and if you diet is lacking, you will suffer before it does as it will just take from your stores.

My office has a decent website with lots of info and common questions. Also, we were required to attend a group "orientation" with a nurse and had the opportunity to as questions.

@HolisticMama: they mainly told me what to avoid, but I learned even more about nutrition when I did bradley classes later. When I could eat in early pregnancy (I got super nauseous after the first few weeks and just did the best I could) I ate a lot of green veggies, beans, avo, eggs, cheese, milk, thought about high protein and high omega 3s...

When I first called my OB after my bfp with ds, they scheduled an appt with the NP/MW of his office. She went over our family history, went over the should/should not, etc. They took my blood/urine. Then they had me come in a week or two later to go over that and gave me a dating u/s transvaginally.

I called and made the appointment, and that's the last I heard from them until they called me to remind me about the appointment.

@Greentea: Sounds like you did an awesome job trying to get a lot of nutrient dense food in even though you weren't feeling well. Awesome, awesome! Did you eat that way before pregnancy, as well?

@Mrs.Someone: Huh...That's very neat. And orientation of sort and you get to meet other new mothers. Nice concept.

@HolisticMama: It was useful, but at the time it felt pretty impersonal...

They never gave me a do/don't list. Except for a list of medications safe to take while pregnant. I got that at my first appointment.

They mailed me a packet of informational stuff - what to eat/not eat, things to be careful doing (lifting heavy, extreme sports), what medicines were safe.
Then I also had a 45 minute chat with a nurse as part of my first appointment going over all the same things, and some more stuff about appointments and testing available.

@HolisticMama: Does your hospital have a class? Mine had one for moms throughout pregnancy, so in the first trimester they would talk about stuff like nutrition. I never attended but I did see some moms attending when I was there for my birth class.

This was a major frustration of mine with my practice. I am well researched but I never got any guidelines from them at all. I too wish they had been really on top of suggestions.

I have my first appointment next week (8 weeks) and they didn't say anything about nutrition etc.

Nothing until my first appointment at 9 weeks. Then I was given a pregnancy handbook and some lists of ok medications. The next appointment, I was given more information about workouts, etc.

Nothing until first appt at 8 weeks. I was shocked. As a first-time mom, I couldn't believe a) I had to wait until 8 weeks, and b) they gave me NO info until then! Crazy!

They just told me to make sure I was taking a prenatal vitamin. They didn't see me until 10 weeks - it felt like forever!

They sent me a big packet of info, which included what to eat and not eat, which meds were safe, how many appointments I should have and what to expect at each one, etc. I was sooooo anxious between BFP and that first apt at 7.5 weeks that I was SO glad to have something to read. I haven't picked it up in ages, though! The packet also had paperwork for my husband and I to fill out and bring with. Hope this helps!

Nope, I didn't even have my first appointment until 10 weeks, and prior to that I was flying solo.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
I don't think so, but I didn't even ask since I already knew so much from HB, pregnancy apps and what not!
pomegranate / 3411 posts
nothing until my first appointment and my first appt was at like 11 weeks because I only found out I was pregnant at almost 8 weeks. .
