Not me or DH. My BIL has been borrowing our car for a bit while his gets repaired. He was picking his car up in TWO DAYS. Last night he totaled our car. What a bummer. He's totally fine. The other driver is fine. It was the other driver's fault. Everyone was cooperative and no one was injured, so that's good.
But now we get to see what insurance has to say about it, and I guess potentially find a new car or something. What a mess.

@Thehistoryofus: I think the other guy's insurance should cover most of everything since it was his fault (and he admitted fault) and whatnot. I'm sure BIL will help pay if there are any costs, but he's a college student and they just cut his hours at work since he's back in class, so who knows how much he'd have to give anyway.

That sucks. But, maybe you can use this as an excuse to upgrade to the mom car that you want? Silver lining, maybe?

Oh noooo, that sucks! Hopefully insurance stuff will go smoothly! Maybe you can look at the bright side--you will get an upgraded car earlier than expected! (the non-bright side could be paying for said car, but I'm sure it will work out!)

@Foodnerd81: I already have the mom car as our other vehicle. But, DH has been wanting a truck after he had to get rid of his a few years ago, so maybe we can finally get him something he enjoys driving!

@chopsuey119: He's just got really bad luck I guess. Stuff like this happens to him all the time (ALL THE TIME ALL THE TIME), but most of the time it isn't his fault.

I can completely relate to this post, hopefully the other's insurance company is easy going and wants to work with you. I had an accident on May 8th and just last week we finally had everything settled with insurance companies. We did have an injury accident (well I went to the hospital to get check out since I was pregnant) so that definitely complicated things more so I hope for a quick turnaround and check for you guys to get a new vehicle!

@jessiejo17: Oh man, what a long, drawn out process! DH are already well versed in sharing a car since we've been doing so for months while BIL borrows our other one. So luckily we don't have to change much of our lifestyle to accommodate this, if it happens to take a long time.

Alright, I thought I would update/ask for advice:
The accident was officially a week ago (happened last Wednesday). The other guy admitted fault and his insurance is covering the incident. But no one will call me back or follow up with me! I have left multiple messages and have yet to get a call back from anyone. I don't even have a claim number to give on my messages because I haven't been able to get one.
Has anyone dealt with a car accident where the other party is responsible? How do you get the other company to provide you a service even though you technically aren't their customer? We really need a rental car and we need to get our damaged vehicle out of the impound lot into a repair facility to see if it can be fixed or if it is totalled.

@highwire: could you perhaps contact your insurance agent to see if they can provide any advice without filing a claim with them. When I had a similar situation back in November my insurance agent said I could file a claim through them (even though the accident was the other person's fault) and then reimbursement of my insurance would be part of the arrangement from the other agency.

@purrpletulips: My insurance said the same thing. We would just be required to lay out all of the money in advance and we are trying to avoid doing that. But maybe we should just go that route so we can get the ball rolling already.

The car is officially totalled. But they offered a very generous settlement check (double what I was expecting) and I negotiated for a few extra days on the rental car so we can shop for something new.

@highwire: whew! worked out! nice!
i was going to say that when we had a hit and run, i had to upfront the deductible and my insurance fixed my car. then we luckily located the hit&runner and was able to get my deductible back.
