Soo, I'm already a terrible mother and it hasn't even been two weeks
haha.
A week and one day ago, LO had his first doctor's appointment at 5 days old. It went really well, he had gained some weight, doctor didn't think anything needed to be done about his tongue tie since he was feeding well, so so-far-so-good.
He wrote us a script for vitamins. I wasn't aware that EBF babies were suppose to take vitamins and there was an awkward moment where I thought he was telling me to take vitamins, to which I told him I was continuing to take the prenatals like suggested. I do love this doctor (he was both my and my husband's pediatrician), but he has a somewhat thick Indian accent, so sometimes I have to ask him to repeat himself XD But he clarified that, no, these would be given to the baby and must be given an hour after feeding and then not to feed again for another hour after that, once a day. He said this was because these vitamins weren't transferred to baby through breastmilk.
Well, I totally forgot about the vitamins script until today, then panicked that I'm slowly killing my baby.
So I ran to the pharmacy just now and picked them up. But the script was written for Tri-Vi-Sol with vitamins A, C, & D with iron. But apparently they don't make it with iron anymore, so you have to buy the iron separate and give 1mL vitamins + 1mL iron.
Well, I just got the vitamins and the pharmacist said to call the dr. and ask if I would need the separate iron also.
So when I got home I looked at the packaging and I'm feeling some kind of way about giving LO these vitamins after reading the ingredients. And maybe I'm just being a paranoid FTM, but it just doesn't seem right to give this little baby who has eaten nothing but breastmilk, who I'm told not to give water to, something with artificial colors and artificial flavoring.
I don't know how to approach the doctor with this - firstly I was suppose to get these a week ago :S And secondly, I'm sure he's going to be insistant about LO taking the vitamins, but I'm wondering if it's necessary or there's a more...natural approach? I'm also feeling sort of weird that he said these cannot be gotten through breastmilk, because it seems as though that's not the case, from what little I've read?
Is anyone here more knowledgeable in this area or felt conflicted about giving your LO Tri-Vi-Sol?
and even then it was here and there that i gave it to him. i stopped altogether once it was srping/summertime and DS was out a lot.
No need to beat yourself up!!
