I will be 12 weeks next week but won't be able to get our "12 week" scan until January 7th because of the holidays. I will be 15 weeks on the dot. If the baby cooperates, will they be able to determine the gender or is it too early?
Thanks!

I found out at 15 weeks with both of my LOs. I think an experienced u/s tech can tell then! I saw 3 lines VERY clearly and no junk poking out between the legs with my own two eyes, so I really think a tech can be 100% sure.
ETA: It may have something to do with level of equipment too? We went to a 3d u/s place with LO1, and they suggested being 15 weeks. And for LO2 we did an elective gender u/s at my OB practice at 15 weeks but they have MFM level equipment - do NT scans at their office/etc. I can't stress enough how crazy clear both of my LOs potty shots were. CLEAR. So every practice may not have equipment like that.

I don't know if it will be accurate or not, but by doctor tried looking at 16w and couldn't figure it out.

My doctor did an ultrasound at 15/16 weeks and was 90% sure we were having a boy. We didn't tell anyone though until we got confirmation at our 20 week anatomy scan.

I wouldn't trust it. I know too many people that found out early and then at their 20 week scan found out that they were having the opposite.

I changed the poll as it wasn't the same as the question in post.

I found out at 14 weeks with DD. I think as long as they get a good crotch shot they'll be able to tell you.

We found out at 16 weeks with 100% certainty. I do agree that it depends on the level of the equipment--this was a MFM office and they had super intense 3d machines.

@PrincessBaby: My office also does in house NT and Anatomy scans, so hopefully they can tell.

Had an unexpected ultrasound at 14 weeks 4 days (couldn't pin down the heartbeat with a Doppler) and they could very well tell that he was a boy!

@simplyfelicity: Oh then I would totally bet you're good For this LO's gender u/s at my practice on their equipment, I saw the 3 lines on the screen literally within seconds. I said, "I think I already see 3 lines..." And the tech smiled and said, "I think I do too, but we're just going to be sure..."And we were 100% confirmed within literally 2 minutes. With my first LO at the 3d/4d place, it took a lot longer and even though my potty shot was clear, it wasn't as apparent on the screen. If your practice has that high level equipment, I REALLY think it will be pretty easy to tell:) It was so obvious for this one!

I mean I wouldn't paint the nursery but I think there's a really good chance they'll be able to tell.

A little off topic but are you just having a 12 week ultrasound or is it the first trimester screening? Because those are only accurate for the NT fold measurements up to 13 w 6 d so I would be concerned about waiting until 15 weeks unless it's just a check up scan.
With that being said, if baby cooperates they should know! Ask them to check the goods and tbay its not the umbilical cord. They can turn the color stuffs on and see blood flow. Our tech did that with my son to confirm the junk she was seeing was penis and not umbilical cord.

@simplyfelicity: completely off topic but is this your nt scan? They actually wouldn't let me schedule mine past 14 weeks (same problem with the holidays) because they didn't think the measurements would be accurate.

I think it's possible! It will be super exciting to know that early. I am super a-type and it was killing me having to wait till 20 weeks because I need to plan plan plan. Haha. I can never be team green!

@BabyPenguinXO: @Tidybee: I know little to none about these, so let me know if I am wrong but we decided to not get the testing and just have a scan. The whole testing and odds thing kind of freaks me out when it sometimes isn't even true.

@simplyfelicity: NT scans usually have blood work with them yes and they do have some false positives. I do it because I want to be prepared and I don't want to pay OOP for the bigger tests, so If this showed something my insurance would cover those bigger blood tests.
They may just be doing a standard ultrasound/growth check then that's totally fine In that case at 15 weeks or whenever they want to do it ! Lol

@simplyfelicity: the NT scan is an ultrasound and blood work, is what I meant. Where verify, harmony, materniT21 are all just blood tests. I assume then they just offered to do an ultrasound for you around 12 weeks. Will it be your first one or did you have an early dating scan!?

It was clear at our Nuchal at 12 weeks that he was a boy but we didn't tell anyone until it was confirmed with an elective at 16 weeks. 100% boy.

We were clearly able to tell with both pregnancies at 15 / 16 weeks (boy & girl). Enjoy baby peeking

I found out at 14 weeks, everyone thought that was way too early but the tech was right!
So excited for you!

My tech made an educated guess yesterday at 12 weeks, 5 days (but baby measuring a week ahead). I don't know if I buy it, though. And she said she wouldn't paint the nursery or anything. We'll see in a few weeks if she was right.

@simplyfelicity: If you have it done before 14 weeks, they can measure the NT and check for the presence of the nasal bone, both of which can raise red flags for DS. A high NT measurement can raise concerns about multiple issues. I don't know that they would give you odds ratios based on the NT alone (if you have decided to forgo bloodwork)... if you don't want it, maybe you could ask them not to give you odds? Just wanted to make sure you didn't want NT measurements, since they can't do that after 14 weeks (as certain features that need to be seen on the scan are not present after that point). Not sure about gender at 15 weeks...I would think there's a decent possibility they could tell you.

Nothing is certain until birth, but there's a decent chance they will be able to tell. The elective place I went to has 99.9% success rate at 16 weeks. That's the earliest they do them. That being said, we went at 15.5 and they were correct about girl. That's also what we were told at 12 weeks based on nub theory.

Our tech (who is awesome, and uses a great US machine--in our hospital) guessed correctly right before 13 weeks. I think it all depends on baby's cooperation and the quality of the machine! Good luck!

I found out at 17 weeks with 100% certainty. If it's a boy, they should definitely be able to tell at 15 weeks
persimmon / 1316 posts
we found out at 15 3/7 weeks and the clinic told us they could tell as early as 13 weeks.
