Did you do further testing? Which tests? What was the outcome?
We had our NT scan today and got three different measurements: 5 mm, 4 mm, and 3.7 mm.
We are seeing a genetic counselor tomorrow.
DH and I are heartbroken.

@swedishfish: Oh, hugs I haven't had an NT scan so I have no experience, but just know that I'm thinking of you, DH, and your LO.

We didn't do the NT and I don't know much about it but thinking of you. Hope others have good things to say

I'm so sorry. I have no experience with abnormal NT, but when I got tested with LO, they also did some testing on my blood and I remember by OBGYN telling me that the risk depended on the combination of the NT echo and the blood results. I hope the genetic counselor can answer your questions tomorrow and help you through the next steps, whatever they may be.

*big hugs* We just had our NT too. I asked if our measurements are okay and she said oh anything under 3mm is great, and you are 1.4mm. That's the only reason I happen to know the numbers right now. She did say that over 3 is not terrible you are just at higher risk and doesn't mean your baby will definitely get it.
*big hugs*!!! Good luck honey!

I would expect at a minimum the genetic counselor to recommend additional testing such as Harmony or Panorama. These are non-invasive blood tests that can help better understand your possible risks by looking at fetal blood cells within your blood.
Keeping you in my thoughts.

So sorry to hear you're dealing with this Hopefully they can give you the Maternit21 test for some concrete answers...

I'm so sorry We had the quad screen blood work done in addition to our NT scan. I agree with PP that the Maternit21 test is a good option.

Oh, I'm so sorry you have to worry about this. I hope it turns out okay, and the tests can put your mind at ease or at least give you some answers.

No advice, but so sorry you are going through this. My understanding is that the scan alone really does not tell you for sure - as everyone else has said, it really just indicates that more testing will tell you more.

I don't have a personal experience but I know two people who had normal healthy babies after NT measured off and one even had not great bloodwork. I'll pray that all is well.

I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. No advice, but I hope everything turns out okay and your appointment with the genetic counselor goes well.

Please keep us updated on how further testing goes. Did they also do bloodwork at the same time? What about the nasal bone?
I'm always cautious with sharing personal stories bc I'm a data person, but I do know 2 people who were told their baby was at higher risk for Down's and everything was fine. This was awhile ago and I imagine the tests have gotten more accurate, but I was surprised to hear their stories.

I'm sorry you are going through this and hope your genetic counselor has some good guidance for you.
Our 18w scan showed a heart calcification, which can be a soft downs marker. Our perinatologist suggested that we proceed with Series Sequential Testing, which we were doing anyways - it gives you your odds of your baby having downs syndrome within 99% accuracy. I don't yet have the results from that and waiting is the hardest part.

Sorry to hear this. I know how stressful this can be. I had some abnormal results on our NT scan, as well....a cyst on the brain and something with the bowel. Thankfully, everything turned out okay. They recommended the Maternit21 blood test, which is extremely accurate/reliable and noninvasive. Maybe you could ask about they test?
honeydew / 7916 posts
I'm hoping so hard for you that whatever testing you pursue proves those numbers to be a fluke.

I would do Maternit21 and then straight to cvs if the maternit21 is positive. I'm so sorry that NT came back higher than expected, but it's only one measure. I know that's no comfort in this challenging time, but try and go one step at a time. Feel free to wall me if you have further questions.

@swedishfish: I do not have any information...
My prayers are with you and your DH.
Give that baby's health to God as you go through these tests!
Praying for health for your sweet baby!
Please keep us updated!

So sorry you are going through this. My counselor prefaced the NT by saying that by itself it was not especially accurate. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

@swedishfish: I've heard under 3 is good. I've always had around 1.4. My guess is you will be offered materniT21 or harmony. I'm sorry. Hugs!!

I've heard many cases of 3mm+ NT scans ending up being totally healthy babies so hoping that is the case for you!
After my NT we did the Verifi test (same as MaterniT21). Not because my NT was abnormal but because I'm at high risk for T18.
I suggest it just because it is so non-invasive and very accurate. It is what my doc recommended before going down the path of a cvs. I believe we waited about 1.5-2 weeks for results.
Will be thinking of you

Thinking of you! a friend had a large measurement, a high risk result of her maternity 21 test and has a totally healthy boy. Hoping for the best outcome for you!

Just want to send big hugs and positive thoughts your way!! I imagine you must be pretty stressed - just remember that it's just something they flag at this point, and doesn't definitively say anything.

You were being so smart and proactive to have done the testing in the first place, and now you will have as many doctors as you need to looking at this baby and checking on you. So much love and light headed your way.

I'm just so sorry you are going through this. My friend had a measurement right at 3 at her 16 week scan and it ended up not being an issue and she has a 9 month old girl now with no issues. It is so stressful and I'm so sorry. I hope everything turns out ok and that baby is healthy...he/she will be perfect no matter what. Big hugs!

@raintreebee: @MamaG: @Mrs.Someone: @lawbee11: @bunnylovesbear: @littlek: @SweetiePie: the MFM doctor I briefly saw today did mention the MaterniT21 test. I'm going to ask the genetic counselor about it tomorrow but my OB told me the accuracy for trisomy 13 is not as high as the accuracy for Down Syndrome and trisomy 18. Thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate it!
@Happygal: I had bloodwork done after the scan for the first part. I go back at the end of August for the second blood draw. My husband said he heard the MFM doctor ask the sono tech if she got a picture of the nasal bone and she said she did. I'll have to ask the counselor about that tomorrow. But I think the MFM doctor is possibly more concerned with a possible heart defect than chromosomal abnormalities because he asked me about congenital heart defects in the family when he came into the room.
@Mrs. Jacks: the problem is that I'm already 12 weeks 3 days and my OB told me that CVS testing can only be done until 13 weeks. I'm hoping the genetic counselor can work some magic and get me in by the end of this week. The insurance company needs 1-3 business days to decide if they'll ok the MaterniT21 testing. I'm leaning toward the CVS if I can get in.

@swedishfish: Hoping for a good outcome thoughts and prayers headed your way.
Just FYI, even if insurance decides not to cover MaterniT21, the most you'll pay out of pocket is $250. I just got the bill from mine (had the test done over a year ago) and this was confirmed by the lab.

@swedishfish: I had to do an "emergency" cvs last minute at almost 13 weeks due to bad blood tests results. The procedure itself was physically easy for me, if you decide to go that route.
nectarine / 2152 posts
@swedishfish: I'm so sorry you're going through this stress! Like others have mentioned, the numbers are not always accurate and having a high number does not automatically mean anything. If you can't end up doing a cvs test, you can do an amniocentesis later on, which will be more accurate. Just so you know you do have more options beyond the blood test and cvs...
I had a cvs done, it's not pleasant but it's helpful to know things. Let me know if you have questions about the procedure. I hope you get in but that it turns out to be nothing!
