We had awesome insurance when we had LO. We only paid $500 out of pocket for everything.
This time around our insurance sucks. No maternity coverage, so we're paying cash. :T

Yikes.
My OB portion is ~300, pediatrician remains to be seen and hospital bill ~900.

We did for M. and are now in the process of attempting to get reimbursed. The good news is that we got a 50% discount because we paid at the time of service.

@regberadaisy: That's not bad!
@Mrs. Jacks: I'm hoping for a smooth delivery! And hoping to stay just one night at the hospital. Dr's fees are about $2900, I got a quote from the hospital and we're looking at around 15k for a 2 night stay! -.- That doesn't include the epidural!

We have a $4000 out of pocket maximum and that seems higher than most people's insurance. I called the hospital and the birth without complications is $14800 and then my OB's fee is $3000. The hospital gives a 40% discount if we pay within the first 30 days after the birth.
Hopefully it's a lot less in your area!
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@HeatherlovesKenny: Oh awesome! I didn't ask about any discounts for paying within 30 days!!!
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@chopsuey119: I can say that a routine vaginal delivery typically costs $6K here. We only had to pay for baby which was just under 1K total.
Ask about discounts for paying at the time of discharge. I mean I couldn't believe they cut our bill in half!
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: Will do! I kinda wanted to gouge my eyeballs out thinking baby #2 was going to cost us around 20k.
I feel a lot better now!
Thank you!

@chopsuey119: Whoa! You should move to Canada and have the baby here. @rubies and I will sponsor you!

Nope, we are blessed with really good insurance! That is a major factor when we get other job offers!

Our in-network deductible out-of-pocket max is $5000. We are getting close to that number already. Thankfully, $3000 is reimbursed. If we go out-of-network, the max is $10,000.

We have several choices of insurance since we work for the Feds. We looked at the maternity coverage for each one before open enrollment this year. But, when I was growing up. My parents didn't have insurance b/c of the insane cost of getting it when you're self employed. We got tons knocked off our bills growing up because we were willing to pay cash at the time of service. I definitely echo PPs about asking for a discount if you pay right away.

Yikes!!!! Maternity coverage was a big thing that we looked at when choosing insurance policies so we won't be paying very much, thank goodness! Just hearing what some people have had to pay makes me sick...

wow thats sucky.
I paid $15 co-pay at my 1st pre-natal appointment and that covered all my visits. I am 5 weeks postpartum and still waiting for my hospital bill

Our itemized bill from Northside was almost $17k. We have yet to receive a bill to pay the remainder of what we owed from our deductible and whatever percentage of that 17k we also need to pay.
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@marriedandlovingit: Yep. Our itemized bill for #1 was around the same! Luckily insurance covered it all! I'm gonna call Northside tomorrow to see if they have a discount for immediate payment!

We only paid 200$ for the room. But that's public healthcare for you! It's FREE!

@blushink: we paid $27.50 for 2 nights in a private room! Yay Canada!
GOLD / pomelo / 5167 posts
@prettylizy: Ya, our insurance only covered a semi-private, but we wanted a private this time around, so we paid the difference! Yay Canada is right!!!
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
@blushink: I fund it funny that we were billed for a private room at all, only because they don't have semi private or ward rooms in our hospital. I was actually a little fussed when I got a bill. DH told me to cool it, it's only $28

@oliviaoblivia: I wish it worked that way, wait, does it? My DH and Ifrequently talk about moving to Canada!

Ah, public health care
we don't have insurance, and I'm not going to have to pay for anything.

I checked my coverage beforehand, and it looked like everything would be 100% covered... BUT, then I got a letter from my insurance company that $8,000 of my $19k hospital bill was denied. I don't really know what that's all about, but I'm not going to start asking any questions until I actually receive a bill from the hospital. So far, no bill. I'm crossing my fingers, but I'm not very hopeful.

For our son, we were living abroad and insurance didn't cover anything. But I think fees are cheaper there than in the states. We paid about 11k for prenatal care + delivery with 2 nights in a private room. With our second, the insurance covered everything after our 3.5k deductible.
pineapple / 12793 posts
@Nskillet: no, it's not that easy. Wish it was. The process for DH to sponsor me took almost two years. I used to joke that I'd have a Canadian baby before I was a Canadian, I got my BFP and that same day I got notice that I had been approved as a resident.

So far, our expected fees will be a total of 250 SEK ($35) and that's for DH staying the night (which includes a bed and breakfast). They couldn't promise him staying in the same room though, in case they're horribly swamped that day. I'm not sure if it's for 1 night or 2 nights.

I did with my first. Ask if you can pay cash in advance- that's how I got my hospital stay for only $2,000. I forget how much I paid for everything now, honestly. The epidural was $700 or $900, the prenatal care/OB was $2,900. Lab work was around $2,000 including ultrasounds. Then there were little incidentals that added up, and it was our first kid so we bought a lot of stuff for her. I think it was around $10-11,000 total in the end. Like I said, there are a lot of cash discounts if you agree to pay cash and especially in advance.
This time we have AMAZING insurance, which is good because there is no way we could afford it this time around if it was going to cost us ten grand.
persimmon / 1150 posts
we paid 15,000 for the hospital and around 3,000 for the Dr.'s fees.
I think about 2,000 for the epidural.

We just have to meet our deductible, the fees for my OBGYN office/delivery (no c-section) is $2900 plus hospital fees, however we haven't had to pay that much out of pocket due to our insurance. The doctor's office also allows us to make monthly payments, so it doesn't seem so bad!

I had maternity coverage, but I just received my health insurance statement, and the hospital charged my insurance $34,000 for my c-section delivery. Crazy. I'd be terrified of what I would owe if we didn't have insurance, even though I'm sure there would be a considerable deduction.
I paid my deductible of $2500. And my maternity coverage was an extra $200/month, so we really paid another $2000 for that.
persimmon / 1161 posts
I honestly never realized how expensive it can be and that even those with insurance won't be covered. I think my own insurance (government job) made me naive about this.
persimmon / 1341 posts
I called last October looking into our maternity coverage because we wanted to know what to expect out of pocket. The news was great...one $20 copay for the first appointment where they confirm the pregnancy via bloodtest. Everything else, including prenatal care and hospital stay, was covered from that point on.
Found out I was pregnant Dec. 4, first prenatal appointment was January 5. Got billed. Confused I called my insurance company...thanks to a change in our union agreement at my husband's work our insurance went from over the moon excellent to still really, really, really good so I can't complain but still costs us more than it used to. Now, we have a copay for every appointment, $200 deductible, and 90% coverage up to $1000 then they pay 100%.
All in all, this baby will cost us around $1500.

We did, but we're living in Mexico. For a c-section it was 4500 USD, a natural birth would have been 3000 USD- at the best private hospital. Obviously at a public hospital it would have been much much less.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
oh you poor dear... and that is an expensive vaginal delivery!!
The hospital charged around 8k to our insurance, and we had to pay nearly 2k out of pocket. We have a maximum out of pocket too.
If we had to pay completely out of pocket, I don't think we would have had a child for a very long time. There is no way we could have afforded that.

I got so lucky! I switched to my husbands insurance when we got married, and he had 100% coverage. We paid one $10 copay for the first visit and that was it. Hospital stay was covered 100% too.
I cringe at what the bill will be if we get pregnant unexpectedly with #2. It's not in our plans, but I worry all the same.
pomegranate / 3980 posts
I don't actually have insurance but I go to a midwife so we ended up paying close to $4000 for everything.
