My mom would make me a Duncan Hines yellow cake with green pistachio frosting, Even today, tasting either of those flavors brings me right back to my childhood birthdays!
I'd love to make a similar food memory for the kids... maybe I'll try the same cake out on them this year!

My mom ALWAYS made our cakes. We never got store bought because... well, because theyre expensive and eff that.
When I was a kid, it was always yellow cake with vanilla frosting. When I got older, she always made me spice cake with cream cheese frosting, which is my favorite.

My mom always made my cake and it was whatever I wanted. When I was really young I always wanted strawberry cake with vanilla frosting. Then I went through a long phase of carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. In high school I moved onto chocolate cake with vanilla frosting.

Um, is it a tradition that most of my birthday cakes have a giant slice missing before I blew out the candles, because my dad wanted a piece first? I used to think it was sort of endearing, now I just think it was a dick thing to do.
Dh's family has a tradition where, if your bday lands on Easter (as E's will frequently), you get a bunny cake. So I'll be making a bunny cake this year for Easter.
I can't wait to do cake traditions with my kids, though. I love baking cakes and making them all fannnncy

The cake tradition in my family is that the birthday girl/boy gets to pick whatever cake they want and my mom would bake it for us.

Not cake but my mom used to make marshmallows on a stick, dipped in chocolate with a smartie on top! I loved it and it was my favourite birthday treat!

She made whatever we picked (or in my case I always wanted a Dairy Queen ice cream cake) so we usually had that!

Mom would bake all of our cakes growing up, for every occasion imaginable (St. Patrick's Day, end of school year, Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc.). The non-birthday ones would go to school, which made us popular in elementary school (everyone wanted to be in our classes); this would never fly nowadays, of course! She also used to do birthday cakes for my 20+ cousins. To accommodate everyone's wishes she would make both white and chocolate cake mix and pour them into the pan from both sides until they met in the middle. Voila, half white and half chocolate cake. The cakes themselves were decorative masterpieces. She had well over a hundred Wilton cake pans, with all sorts of characters on them. Here's an example of one she made a few times (online stock image):

But I would like to. So far, with the older boys, I have made them kind of "theme" cakes (terrible ones, really). But I want to make it a tradition to make their birthday cakes. My BFF's mom used to put money (wrapped in foil) in her cakes and I LOVE that idea and might do the same for my kids.

My mom always brought store bought sheet cake in for my class because my bday was the first week of school. Other than that my bday "cake" was a slice or scoop of whatever I ordered at my bday restaurant dinner.

We didn't have any traditions, but I definitely want to have cake traditions for our LO. I love baking and decorating cakes.

My mom always made us a "shape cake" - a cake that was the shape and decorated like something else like animals and I think I had the princess cake 3 or 4 times. Her mom did it too and the book that most of these cakes came from now have 3 generations of people's names and dates of when that cake was made. It's pretty awesome to see that your monkey cake was also Aunt Paula's 10th birthday cake or whatever. She did stop doing that when we stopped being kids though (like 11 or 12).

@Dandelion: Angel food cake is my favourite, too. But I got it so rarely because of the tradition of the character cakes. DH isn't very fond of it either, so it's still a big treat.

@mrbee: I would have stolen your cake! That was my FAVORITE combo when I was little. My grandma would make me cupcakes with those flavors when I visited. If it was during the summer, she'd make pistachio fluff, which was pistachio pudding, pineapple, marshmallows, and a few other dreamy ingredients!
