I think I know which hospital I want to go to. It's close and only 15 minutes from home.
Wondering if I should tour others to see how they compare.
If you did, how many did you see?

we live down the street from a big hospital and it had a good reputation for its maternity care, so i didn't need to look anywhere else.

We knew which hospital we wanted to go to and toured that one. My OB's affiliated hospital + reputation + 2.5 miles from home = made the decision for us.

We knew which one we wanted to go to based on c-section rates and word of mouth. Our chosen hospital also had nurse midwives so we were sold.

For my first, it was the hospital with the practice I had already been seeing. It's far, so I switched to a midwife practice out of the hospital 15 minutes from my house for LO2.

We knew which hospital we wanted to go to. It wasn't the closest but not too far. We did a tour specifically for expectant parents. We wanted to be familiar with it since we were anxious about the big day. I think it made my husband feel a little better- he was more nervous than I was!

There's only one in town that delivers babies, so it was a pretty easy choice

I knew; when I went to visit SIL after she had #1 I loved that hospital so much that I knew I had to go there! It's not the closest (20 min) but very doable.

I chose the midwife practice I wanted to use and they only work out of one hospital so I didn't have a choice about that part. Luckily, it ended up being pretty great.

My OB only delivers at one hospital, so I just toured that one!

I knew I wanted to go with a midwife practice, so I started by searching for that. I didn't actually tour the hospital until our birthing class a few months before my due date, but I already knew most of their standard procedures and stuff. It wasn't the closest, but still usually wasn't too bad (except when I was in labor and our exit was closed for construction!).

I asked my OB where she prefers to deliver, she stated the hospital, and it was 10 min away from my house. I've had friends deliver there and *loved* it, so it was fine for me. Didn't tour any others

There are two huge hospitals in my town and another smaller one. All are covered by my insurance and my dr had privileges at them as well. We chose the one that had the highest level NICU just in case our twins came early.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
OB only delivers at one. I never did a tour of the hospital since everyone told me (including a nurse that delivers there) said it is a waste of time. All you need to know is where to park and follow signs to L&D.

I went with the major women's hospital in my town. And they had just finished a brand new facility the month before my 1st was born. Plus, the ob office is in the adjoining medical office building.

Ha! Pretty much the same reasons as @mrsjyw: .

I was labeled high risk so I could only deliver at the biggest local hospital. I wanted the nicest/ newest hospital that I had heard great things about but it wasn't an option.

I only toured the one after I had decided to go deliver there. I did; however, research a bunch of hospitals before deciding on an OB practice (because that dictated where I'd deliver), I looked at c-section rates, maternal death rates, NICU level, reviews, photos, etc.
The hospital I chose is 35 min away without traffic, 1 hr+ with traffic. I loved it though when I delivered DD#1 there. There is a hospital 5 min from my house that would be a lot more convenient, but they don't have a nursery or a NICU, and I really wanted to have good NICU, just in case.

I knew which one I wanted..it was one of the further ones but my husband was born there and they have a great birth center.
pomelo / 5607 posts
There's only one midwife practice in town, and they only work out of one hospital, so I had no real choice. But it's got the best NICU, and a great reputation, and it's close enough, so I think I might have chosen it anyway.
pomelo / 5228 posts
I choose based on nicu level (had some risk factors). Also, the most recommended Ob practice delivered there. It was a PITA to go to monthly though (downtown), so if there next time I may go elsewhere.

I knew which one I wanted to deliver at, which has an excellent NICU unit. I wanted to deliver somewhere that I knew my babies would have top-rated care, if it was needed. That was really important to me since I had a twin pregnancy, which is automatically considered high-risk. Fortunately, we didn't need the NICU at all, but it was very reassuring to have it there.

In our city there are only 2 hospitals to choose from, I did a tour of the one I knew I wanted, my sister delivered at the other so I had been there and seen the rooms, ect. and I knew the one I wanted was nicer She choose it because it has a higher NICU rating, but by the time I delivered a year later, the hospital I choose redid their NICU and have the same rating and newer equipment.

I toured the hospital that my OB is associated with. I also did some research about it. I decided to switch OBs because I did not like the hospital.
ETA: Initially I thought it would be the best hospital for me until I did some more digging. Ultimately I decided that I did not want to deliver my baby in NYC at all. Since we live right across the Hudson in NJ I decided to pick a hospital in NJ that would give me (a) a private postpartum room (b) no triage process to be admitted (c) a tub (d) no separate "birthing center" so no need to transfer floors in the middle of labor if anything goes wrong.
I am REALLY happy that I did my homework because I had a great experience with my new OB and new hospital.

From the beginning I was deciding between a major hospital a 10 min walk from our house or a birthing center a 40 min drive. I toured both and decided on the hospital since they have a very respectable midwife group and are getting their baby friendly certification. The birth center we considered also had a fairly high transfer rate and I figured if there was a chance I would end up at a hospital anyway Id rather it be the one I chose myself. So far we are very happy with our choice!

My midwives only deliver at one hospital, so that's the one I went to. There were closer hospitals, but they didn't have the type of atmosphere I wanted and neither have CNM's that deliver there.

There is one 5 minutes away that is new and super nice and I have been a Providence patient since I graduated from college. So it was the one in town or another 40 minutes away. I just toured the one here knowing I would have the baby here.

No. I work at a hospital and like the hospital and nurses here. I think it's more important to pick a provider you can have a god relationship with. My provider has her clinic across the street from the hospital and only delivers here. There one more hospital in town but agai. I wanted a particular doctor and it's convenient to deliver where I work. I also think that many of the factors/amenities that people at concerned about prior to delivery matter much less in the end than they think they will.

I toured my hospital when it was still practically new. But I went there because I was having knee surgery. We didn't visit the maternity ward, but now DH and I both agreed right then and there during that tour we would deliver our future babies here. The hospital was private and flipping awesome. When we delivered DS there, we absolutely loved it!

I talked to friends who have delivered in town, especially those who had births at more than one hospital. It was pretty clear which hospital was the favorite. I chose my OB based in this information.

I work at a hospital known for its birth center so I didn't have any question about where I would go. Often times people choose their provider and then that dictates where they deliver.

We live near a major medical center that's very highly regarded. Also, it's where my husband works as a resident. And it's where my OB is! So it was an easy decision.

My OB only worked out of two hospitals so we toured both and chose the one with the better NICU. It was also closer to our house.

For LO1, my OB was at a hospital practice, so I gave birth at that hospital and didn't shop around at all.
For LO2, my OB is on staff at the main general public hospital, but it has a mediocre reputation for births (in that it's more like a factory since it handles so many births, and is known more for high risk, multiples or c-sections). I visited just one hospital, a private "expat" hospital that has a great reputation and nearly all of the staff speaks English. That's where I gave birth.

My doc is affiliated with a clinic in town, so that's where I'll go. Unless it's before 35w, then he said I have to go to the University Hospital. It's funny because we used to pass this clinic all the time when we lived in the city, and thought it was so fancy pants. I wondered what it must be like with a lake view room, after delivering your baby! (I have no idea if the maternity ward faces the lake.) A lot of DH's coworkers have delivered there (or their wife) and he's heard nothing but good things.
One thing I'm kinda pissed about is that I emailed them to ask about classes and a tour, and they haven't wrote me back yet I emailed on Monday. Guess I need to call.
