If you had no known risk factors and were not AMA, did your insurance cover the NT scan and bloodwork?
I never really thought to ask, and my insurance covered it last time. But my friend said hers wasn't covered because she was low risk and under 35 so she couldn't have an ultrasound until 16 weeks, which just seems really late to me. Curious if that's more common than I thought.

mine was covered in Ontario by health care, but I am not sure it is the same for every province.

Yep, never occurred to me that it might not be. Fortunately, I didn't have to worry about it!

Yes - I did call mine ahead of time to verify that it would be covered. They also covered genetic testing I opted to have done as well.

Yes, they covered the NT Scan last time (but I did call and ask). This time around we did the genetic blood screening instead of the NT Scan... still don't know yet if it was covered but it's only $250 if it isn't which is why I didn't go to the trouble of calling in advance.

Yup! I had a co-pay though, which was equivalent to if I got a sonogram at the OB office ($20).

@Alivoo01: yeah I had to pay some towards my deductible or co insurance or something. But my friend was under the impression she could have to pay for the whole thing- and neither her insurance company nor the hospital could tell her what that would even be. Beyond frustrating. She is pregnant again but will probably wait until 16 weeks again.

@Foodnerd81: I recall my OB telling me that it might not be covered based on insurance plans. I called ahead and fortunately they were able to tell me if my insurance covered it or not. That's frustrating that nobody is able to tell her if it is or not. Especially the insurance company! Shouldn't you know?? It's your job to know people! lol

@Alivoo01: well last time she called and they said no but they couldn't be 100% sure without the exact billing code, but the hospital wouldn't give her the exact code. So she assumed no from that but it seems so odd.

@Foodnerd81: I would try the hospital billing department again. There is no way they can't give her the billing code. Obviously SOMEONE knows what it is, or they would never be able to bill the procedure!

i was told it would cost $200-300 and since my copay for my entire OB prenatal care was $150, i'm going with my insurance didn't cover it. but i didn't have it done.

@Foodnerd81: interesting! i remember them giving me a pamphlet (this was with R, so 3 years ago) with some pricing special to CA, but I guess since it seemed like my insurance covered so much and this was so high in comparison (not in the grand scheme of crazy medical pricing) that it was elective and therefore my insurance didn't cover it, even if it was discounted for CA residents. this time around, they didn't even ask me if i wanted any screening until well after the time window for the blood draw or NT scan, so i didn't look into it further.

Yes it was covered - normal, low risk, not AMA. No problem. Regular quad screen bloodwork (or whatever they do) was also covered.
Noninvasive prenatal testing (i.e., MaterniT21, Verifi) would not have been covered - only for AMA or risk factors. My 16 wk u/s showed a soft marker for Down syndrome so then my insurance paid for the test (which was thankfully normal).

Yes, they covered that one as well as a dating scan that I had done at 6 weeks.

It was covered for DD but my insurance only covers 2 ultrasounds so I couldn't get the dating one that I know some people get, just the NT and anatomy.

i was told it would likely be covered by insurance (Tufts), but i ended up paying about $150 for it.

Yes but only a portion of it so I did have to pay some.

Yep it was covered! I also ended up having the maternit21 test at like 22 weeks after my anatomy scan showed a few soft markers and that was unfortunately not covered after all...but all the other prenatal scans and blood work were
